Black voters are turning on Harris
A new poll suggests that Vice President Kamala Harris does not have the support of a significant percentage of the Black voter demographer.
This could prove to be fatal to Harris's 2024 presidential campaign, considering just how important Black voters are for Democratic presidential candidates.
The poll comes from the New York Times and Sienna College.
The flip side to all of this is that former President Donald Trump, in the upcoming election, just might get a record amount of support, for a Republican candidate, from Black voters.
Here are the numbers:
The pollster conducted the survey, of 589 Black voters, from Sept. 29 to Oct. 6, 2024. The margin of error is plus or minus about two percentage points.
What the pollster found is that Harris is receiving 78% support from Black voters. This may seem like an overwhelming figure, and it is. But, it is nothing unusual for the Democrats.
In fact, it is a bit on the low side, considering recent elections. In the 2020 presidential election, for example, President Joe Biden received 90% of the Black vote. And, in 2016, candidate Hillary Clinton received 92% of it.
On the other side of the coin, Trump went from receiving 7% of the Black vote in 2016 to now, according to the poll, receiving 15% of it.
That is a massive gain - one that could have a significant impact on the 2024 presidential election.
A major admission
The Times, in its report, suggested that this could be bad news for Harris.
The Times writes:
Nearly eight out of 10 Black voters nationwide said they would vote for Ms. Harris, the poll found, a marked increase from the 74 percent of Black voters who said they would support Mr. Biden before he dropped out of the race in July. But Mr. Biden won 90 percent of Black voters to capture the White House by narrow margins in 2020, and the drop-off for Ms. Harris, if it holds, is large enough to imperil her chances of winning key battleground states.
It is likely for this reason that former President Barack Obama recently attempted to target Black male voters.
At a recent rally for Harris, he said:
Now, I also want to say that seems to be more pronounced with the brothers. So if you don’t mind, just for a second, I’m going to speak to y’all, and say that when you have a choice that is this clear, when on the one hand, you have somebody who grew up like you, knows you, went to college with you, understands the struggles and pain and joy that comes from those experiences.
The situation, however, has backfired on Obama, with many Democrats arguing that he crossed a line here.
