Former President Donald Trump got some positive news last week in the form of a new poll which showed him narrowly leading Vice President Kamala Harris in North Carolina.

Yet Trump still has challenges in the Tar Heel State, as evidenced by the fact that a Democratic candidate there was arrested for stealing his signs.

"My worse angels got the better of me and I removed the signs"

According to Breitbart, Lowell Simon serves as the head of the Democratic Party in Moore County and is also running for a seat in the state legislature.

WRAL News reported this past Thursday that Simon issued a statement in which the 68-year-old admitted to taking Trump campaign signs which had been placed along Seven Lakes Drive.

"My worse angels got the better of me and I removed the signs," Simon was quoted as saying. "I shouldn't have done that. I didn't do it in the stealth of night or anything. I did it when it was five o'clock in the afternoon."

"I've been telling people for years don't touch opposition signs, but I was [mad]," he continued after explaining that the signs in question were blocking signs that he had previously put up.

Simon doesn't believe law is being applied equally

"If people are going to break the law, myself included, there should be consequences," the Moore County Democratic Party chair acknowledged.

"But, the law should be applied equally. I understand that sometimes you catch the criminal and sometimes you don't, but it has to be applied equally," Simon stressed.

Breitbart noted that Moore County Sheriff's Office put up a Facebook post which provided details surrounding the incident as well as Simon's arrest.

"On October 10, 2024, at approximately 5:25 p.m., a sheriff’s deputy working in the West End area observed Lowell Simon removing campaign signs from the roadside along Seven Lakes Drive," the post explained.

Sign thefts occurring in other states

"The deputy, who was responding to an unrelated call at the time, later followed up at Simon’s residence, where the signs were found in his vehicle," it continued.

"Simon admitted to removing the signs, which were then recovered and returned to their original owner," the post observed before adding that Simon was ultimately charged with "two counts of misdemeanor larceny of political signs."

Reports of political sign theft have emerged across the country during this election cycle, with examples being found in New Mexico, Wisconsin, and Massachusetts.
