'60 Minutes' issues damning statement about Kamala Harris editing controversy

Donald Trump is claiming vindication after CBS admitted to editing its 60 Minutes interview to make Kamala Harris sound clearer.

For weeks, Trump has accused 60 Minutes of editing the interview to make Harris look better. In a fiery, indignant statement Sunday, the liberal network dismissed Trump's claims as "false."

At the same time, CBS confessed to making Harris' answer sound "more succinct."

CBS responds to Trump

The controversy exploded this month when CBS aired two versions of Harris' response to a question about Israel.

A preview that aired on CBS' Face The Nation showed Harris' rambling, unedited answer. A more concise version appeared on 60 Minutes.

In a lengthy statement, CBS characterized the edit as part of the normal production process. The network described the cleaner version as essentially the "same answer."

"60 Minutes gave an excerpt of our interview to ‘Face the Nation’ that used a longer section of her answer than that on 60 Minutes. Same question. Same answer. But a different portion of the response," the statement said.

"When we edit any interview, whether a politician, an athlete, or movie star, we strive to be clear, accurate and on point. The portion of her answer on 60 Minutes was more succinct, which allows time for other subjects in a wide-ranging 21-minute-long segment."

Where's the transcript?

This isn't the first time 60 Minutes has been accused of treating Trump unfairly. Trump walked out of a 2020 interview with Lesly Stahl as she pushed misleading talking points about the Hunter Biden laptop controversy.

CBS needled Trump for "backing out" of an interview this year, although he denies ever agreeing to one.

"Our long-standing invitation to former President Trump remains open," the statement continued. "If he would like to discuss the issues facing the nation and the Harris interview, we would be happy to have him on 60 Minutes."

Trump is pushing for CBS to release the full, unedited transcript of Harris' interview, but the network has refused.

"60 Minutes just admitted to doing exactly what President Trump accused them of doing. They edited in a different response - from another part of her answer - to make Kamala Harris sound less incoherent than she really was. Their statement is not a denial, it is an admission that they did exactly what they were accused of," the Trump campaign said Sunday. "This is another reminder of how hopelessly biased 60 Minutes is, and how correct President Trump was to decline their invitation to be subjected to their fake news hackery. Release the Transcript!"
