Bill Barr: Trump's charges should be dropped as Americans "have rendered their verdict"

Former Attorney General Bill Barr has frequently criticized President-elect Donald Trump since he left the White House four years ago.

However, Barr recently called on prosecutors to drop the cases that they have brought against the soon-to-be commander-in-chief.

"The American people have rendered their verdict"

According to the New York Post, Barr made that pronouncement while being interviewed by Fox News on Wednesday.

"The American people have rendered their verdict on President Trump, and decisively chosen him to lead the country for the next four years," the former attorney general said.

"They did that with full knowledge of the claims against him by prosecutors around the country and I think Attorney General [Merrick] Garland and the state prosecutors should respect the people’s decision and dismiss the cases against President Trump now," he stressed.

"Further maneuvering on these cases in the weeks ahead would serve no legitimate purpose and only distract the country and the incoming administration from the task at hand," Barr insisted.

President-elect still has open criminal cases in Georgia and Washington, D.C.

"The public interest now demands that the country unite and focus on the challenges we face at home and abroad," he declared.

Barr went on to argue that "Attorney General Garland and all the state prosecutors should do the right thing and help the country move forward by dismissing the cases."

Trump was indicted in Georgia on racketeering charges in late last year while also being convicted in New York this past spring on 34 counts of falsifying business records.

At the federal level, Trump is facing a slew of charges brought in Washington, D.C. by Special Counsel Jack Smith over his conduct following the 2020 election.

Although Smith also charged Trump with mishandling classified documents, a judge dismissed them on the grounds that Smith's appointment was unlawful. He is appealing her decision.

Trump is scheduled to be sentenced in New York later this month

Trump is scheduled to be sentenced in New York on November 26 by Judge Juan Merchan despite a defense request to dismiss the case.

Conservative legal expert Cully Stimson told Fox News this week that "a normal judge would dismiss this case, and then the DA would have to decide, what — if anything – remains, so that we could consider re-bringing the case."

Nevertheless, Stimson stressed that "Judge Merchan has shown himself to be nothing but an ordinary judge," thus making the outcome uncertain.
