Former Harris staffer says Biden should resign so vice president can serve out his term

While Vice President Kamala Harris was soundly defeated last week, some observers say she should still end up getting the presidency.

That case was recently made by one of Harris' former staffers who called on President Joe Biden to step aside in her favor.

Elevating Harris would make Biden "a transitional figure"

According to Fox News, the suggestion was put forward by former Harris communications director Jamal Simmons during a Sunday appearance on CNN's "State of the Union."

"Joe Biden’s been a phenomenal president, he's lived up to so many of the promises he’s made. There's one promise left that he could fulfill, being a transitional figure," Simmons was quoted as saying.

"He could resign the presidency in the next 30 days, make Kamala Harris President of the United States," he went on to add.

Simmons pointed out how such a move would absolve the vice president "from having to oversee the January 6th transition of her own defeat."

Simmon's suggestion was met with skepticism

"And it would make sure, it would dominate the news, at a point where Democrats have to learn, drama and transparency and doing things the public want to see," Simmons pointed out.

The former Harris staffer further maintained that "[t]his is the moment for us to change the entire perspective of how Democrats operate."

Fox News noted that those remarks drew skepticism from "State of the Union" host Dana Bash, who said, "This has now jumped from an internet meme to a Sunday morning show."

Meanwhile, fellow panel member and CNN commentator Scott Jennings remarked that "Jamal’s out here writing a season of 'House of Cards.'"

Simmons says stepping down would "turn tables on Trump"

However, Simmons doubled down in a social media post, writing, "Joe Biden has been amazing but he should fulfill one last promise - to be transitional."

"Biden should resign and make Kamala Harris the first woman president. It'd turn tables on Trump, keep Kamala from presiding over Jan 6 [and] make it easier for [the] next woman to run," he maintained.

"We are not playing table tennis. We are in a mixed martial arts fight and Americans respond to drama and excitement," Simmons later asserted.
