Oregon Republican with union ties eyed for Trump's Labor Secretary
In recent days, Donald Trump's Palm Beach, Florida residence has been buzzing with job seekers and foreign leaders eager to curry favor with the president-elect.
According to Fox News Digital, Oregon Republican Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer is headed to Mar-a-Lago this week for an audience with the once and future president - as Republicans reportedly push Trump to tap her for Labor Secretary.
She narrowly lost her re-election battle this month to Democrat Janelle Bynum, but Trump may put Chavez-DeRemer to work in a new role - in a power move that could solidify the GOP's growing strength with working-class voters.
The congresswoman has union backing, with the Teamsters endorsing her for the Cabinet role.
Labor-friendly Republican
Of course, her union backing could make her a controversial choice for many free-market conservatives. But some Republican colleagues argue she could help the GOP expand its working-class appeal.
“She understands the importance of having pro-growth, pro-labor and pro-business policies that support America’s workforce, respect organized labor and ensure shared prosperity,” New York Rep. Mike Lawler (R) wrote on X.
"She is a champion for workers; she is a problem solver, and she is a no nonsense leader," New York Republican Marc Molinaro wrote on X.
Trump courted support from labor unions during his campaign, inviting Teamsters boss Sean O'Brien to speak at the RNC in July.
In an op-ed for Compact Magazine, O'Brien called Chavez-DeRemer the "exact type of champion for the American worker that Republicans should get behind if they are serious about becoming the working-class party."
Trump's realignment
Trump won re-election with strong support from the working class and Hispanic men, leading many to assess that Trump has ushered in a political realignment - as the Democratic party has drifted from its former blue-collar base to embrace elitist "woke" issues.
"President Trump expanded on his Working Class coalition by speaking directly to hardworking Americans,” Chavez-DeRemer tweeted this week.
“This is a true political realignment. We must continue to be the party of the American Worker, with President Trump leading the way!”
Trump has made it clear he is eager to get to work, announcing a series of Cabinet picks at a breakneck pace.
Trump's Cabinet picks have been a mixture of controversial and conventional. In his first setback, Trump's nominee for attorney general, Matt Gaetz, withdrew his bid Thursday following intense backlash.
