Senator Ernst will oversee Musk's "DOGE Caucus"
U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) is going to be in charge of the newly formed Senate DOGE Caucus.
As such, the New York Post reports that she will be working hand-in-hand with Elon Musk, Vivek Ramaswamy, and the other members of the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Other members of the caucus, thus far, are:
Sens. Ted Budd (R-NC), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) James Lankford (R-Okla.), and Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.).
The big question is whether the Department of Government Efficiency is going to be able to efficiently carry out its purpose.
Background
Leading up to the 2024 presidential election, President-Elect Donald Trump teamed up with Elon Musk, who claimed that he could save the government - or, more importantly, the taxpayer - some serious money if Trump were to let him clean things up.
After being elected, Trump gave Musk and Ramaswamy the nod.
Trump wrote:
Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my adminstraiton to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies - Essential to the "Save America" Movement.
To get this done, DOGE is going to have to work with Congress.
This is why committees have been formed in both the upper and lower chambers. Ernst will take care of the upper chamber, while U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is set to play a big role in the House.
Looking forward
Ernst has made it no secret that she is fully on board with the mission of DOGE, and the same could be said of Greene.
"Iowans elected me with a mandate to cut Washington’s pork and make ’em squeal! From billion-dollar boondoggles to welfare for politicians and trillion-dollar slush funds, my decade-long investigations have exposed levels of abuse that are almost too insane to believe," Ernst said.
She added, "The Senate DOGE Caucus is ready to carry out critical oversight in Congress and use our legislative force to fight against the entrenched bureaucracy, trim the fat and get Washington back to work for Americans."
It would appear that Musk and Ramaswamy are happy to work with Ernst. Ramaswamy released a statement, saying, "We look forward to partnering with the Senate to downsize government. Grateful to Sen. Joni Ernst for her excellent suggestions yesterday!"
Musk and Ramaswamy have already laid out their plans for DOGE in an op-ed that they published through the Wall Street Journal. According to The Hill, "The op-ed seemingly seeks to address widespread skepticism about the ability of Musk and Ramaswamy’s panel to enact change."
