UnitedHealthCare CEO murder suspect is heir to holiday resort fortune
The man suspected of murdering UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson is the heir to a holiday resort fortune created by his grandparents and a member of a prominent Baltimore family, the Daily Mail reported.
Luigi Mangione, 26, is the grandson of the late Nicholas Mangiano, who owned Turf Valley Resort and Hayfields Country Club, as well radio station WCBM-AM and Lorien Health Services, a nursing home.
His mother Kathleen Zannino Mangione, owns a boutique travel company, and his sister MariaSanta Mangione is a respected doctor. His cousin is Republican Maryland House of Delegates member Nino Mangione.
He grew up in Towson, Maryland and attended the prestigious Gilman School; he was valedictorian of his class there in 2016. His parents still live in the $800,000 home he grew up in.
The arrest
Luigi Mangione was arrested at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania on firearms charges Monday morning and remains in jail there.
He was found with a manifesto and a gun, silencer, and fraudulent ID from New Jersey. The ID is the same one the killer used to check into a hostel in November before the killing.
The manifesto showed anger toward the healthcare industry, specifically its massive profits.
Mangione was also known to be an anti-capitalist who worked as a software engineer until 2023 after attending the University of Pennsylvania.
He also lived in San Francisco and Honolulu.
Charges filed
A worker from the McDonald's recognized Mangione from drawings done after the shooting and called police.
Mangione also had clothing on him that matched what the killer wore.
He was charged with the murder in New York on Tuesday and faces extradition from Blair County where he was arrested.
Specifically, Mangione was charged with second-degree murder, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second-degree, criminal possession of a forged instrument and criminal possession of a weapon in the third-degree.
He was observed yelling something about the charges being an "insult to the intelligence of the American people'' as he was led into the courthouse for the extradition hearing Tuesday afternoon.
Cousin Nino Mangione released a statement about Luigi's arrest on behalf of the family.
It read, "We only know what we have read in the media. Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved."
