Trump nominates former journalist Kari Lake as next director of Voice of America media outlet

President-elect Donald Trump has spent the past several weeks since the election announcing his various appointments and nominations to a wide assortment of governmental positions in advance of the beginning of his second administration in January.

That continued on Wednesday with Trump's announcement that he has selected Arizona's Kari Lake to serve as the next director of the U.S. government-owned Voice of America media outlet, Fox News reported.

Though some on the left will undoubtedly disagree, the nomination makes sense and seemingly takes advantage of Lake's skill sets and experience, given her decades-long career in journalism before her more recent unsuccessful runs for political office in Arizona during the past two election cycles.

Trump nominates Lake

In a Truth Social post on Wednesday, President-elect Trump wrote, "I am pleased to announce that Kari Lake will serve as our next Director of the Voice of America."

"She will be appointed by, and work closely with, our next head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, who I will announce soon, to ensure that the American values of Freedom and Liberty are broadcast around the World FAIRLY and ACCURATELY, unlike the lies spread by the Fake News Media," he continued.

"Kari was a beloved News Anchor in Arizona, which supported me by record margins, for over 20 years. Congratulations Kari!" Trump added.

Lake responds to nomination

In response to that announcement, Lake posted on her X account, "I am honored that President Trump has asked me to lead the Voice of America."

"@VOANews is a vital international media outlet dedicated to advancing the interests of the United States by engaging directly with people across the globe and promoting democracy and truth," she continued. "With an audience of 326 million people, Voice of America delivers information in 48 languages."

"Under my leadership, the VOA will excel in its mission: chronicling America’s achievements worldwide," Lake added. "Thank you for putting your trust in me, President Trump. I look forward to leading the Voice of America, and I can’t wait to get started."

Unclear when, or if, Lake will take on new role

Perhaps unsurprisingly, CNN reported that the reaction among VOA's predominately left-leaning journalists and other employees to the news that Kari Lake would be their next boss was not particularly positive and instead was mostly fear and loathing of what may be to come.

It is unclear when Lake will get started in the new role, as President-elect Trump actually doesn't have the authority to directly nominate the head of the VOA.

Rather, he can only influence the next head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, whom he will also nominate, and that individual will select VOA's director in conjunction with the bipartisan and independent International Broadcasting Advisory Board.

Current VOA director responds to news of impending replacement

Interestingly enough, VOA just got a new director a few months ago with Michael Abramowitz, who by all accounts is well-liked by VOA's employees and reporters, and who was quite diplomatic in response to the news that he might soon be replaced by the incoming president.

"I welcome a smooth transition of power for both USAGM and VOA," Abramowitz said in a statement. "I intend to cooperate with the new administration and follow the process put in place for the appointment of the Director of VOA."
