With a concentrated, growing effort for the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump to significantly decrease government waste and inefficiency, some of his allies in Congress are already working on it.

According to Fox Business, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) is introducing legislation to move a large number of federal workers out of Washington, D.C., in an effort to fix a broken government bureaucracy.

The Republican senator will introduce a series of bills regarding the proposition. They were first obtained by Fox Business.

The bill, called the "Returning SBA to 5 Main Street Act," will move a staggering number of federal workers from the Small Business Administration (SBA) -- up to a third of them -- out of D.C. and to other duty stations around the country.

What's going on?

The move is largely supported by Republicans and will highlight her first efforts as a GOP Senate Caucus chair of the unofficial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) created by Trump, Elon Musk, and Vivek Ramaswamy.

Fox Business noted:

The bill reduces SBA’s HQ office space and "100 percent telework" ability, by moving at least 30 percent of HQ employees into various regions across America and reducing HQ office space by an equal amount. It comes after the SBA stated that even if 100% of SBA employees came in-person to the Washington, D.C., HQ, only 67 percent of SBA’s HQ capacity would be used.

Ernst commented on her bill to the network, explaining why it's an important first step in unclogging D.C.

"Ask any small business owner — if your customers can’t reach you, your doors won’t be open very long," Ernst told FOX Business.

She added, "The SBA is supposed to serve Main Street, but there might as well be a ‘closed for business’ sign up at the agency because it is nearly impossible to reach anyone with all the bureaucrats permanently out of office."

"I can think of no better way to help the SBA connect with the people it serves than to take some of the employees out of Washington and relocate them across the country," she continued.

A large part of the efforts proposed by DOGE will focus on getting federal workers back into the office and end the years-long abuse of teleworking.

Social media reacts

Ernst, who has recently met opposition from conservatives due to her initial hesitation in confirming Pete Hegseth for Defense Secretary, received mixed reactions to her news.

"Absolutely NOT! Send them outta DC? Sure! With a PINK SLIP," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "You aren’t working for the US people either until you confirm @PeteHegseth."
