Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was part of a bipartisan congressional delegation that traveled to Europe this week to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, a pivotal fight in December 1944 that marked a turning of the tide on the Western Front in World War II when U.S. troops withstood a surprise counteroffensive by German forces.

Pelosi will not be joining her colleagues for any further events on the trip after she was injured and hospitalized following a fall in Luxembourg, Fox News reported.

The elderly congresswoman's injury was sustained when she fell down some stairs immediately after everybody had posed together for a group photo.

Pelosi hospitalized

In a statement released on Friday by Rep. Pelosi's office, spokesman Ian Krager said, "While traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation."

"Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals," he continued. "She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history."

"Speaker Emerita Pelosi conveys her thanks and praise to our veterans and gratitude to people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service in World War II and their role in bringing peace to Europe," the spokesman said.

Krager added, "Speaker Emerita Pelosi was personally and officially honored to travel with the distinguished delegation, many of whom had family members who fought in World War II -- including her uncle, Johnny. She looks forward to returning home to the U.S. soon."

Suffered a hip fracture and will need surgery

According to The New York Times, citing an anonymous source who was not authorized to disclose details to the media, Rep. Pelosi suffered a fractured hip after she had a "hard fall" on a flight of marble stairs at the Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg.

The congresswoman was attempting to navigate the polished marble stairs in a pair of black 4-inch stiletto heels following a group photo when she tripped and fell.

Doctors were said to be optimistic that the damage could be repaired by a "routine operation," though it was unclear if that surgery would be performed immediately in Europe or upon Pelosi's return to the United States.

Pelosi appeared "unsteady and frail" before fall

The Daily Mail reported that according to unnamed sources, former Speaker Pelosi, 84, had appeared "unsteady and frail" and was witnessed "gripping the hand" of Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX) during the photo op that took place right before she fell.

In an X post, McCaul wrote, "I’m disappointed Speaker Emerita Pelosi won’t be able to join the rest of our delegation’s events this weekend as I know how much she looked forward to honoring our veterans. But she is strong, and I am confident she will be back on her feet in no time. Praying for a speedy recovery, @SpeakerPelosi!"

The outlet noted that despite stepping back from her prior leadership role last term, Pelosi continues to wield enormous power and influence over her congressional colleagues and has even indicated that she plans to run for re-election for yet another term in office in 2026.

Depending upon the severity of her reported hip fracture and how well her recovery following the "routine operation" to repair it goes, the long-serving California politician's plans for the future may be subject to change.
