Fans of a popular Netflix show were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of one of its young stars.

According to People, José de la Torre, known by fans for starring in Netflix’s series "Toy Boy," has died. He was 37.

De la Torre reportedly passed away on Dec. 5 in Spain, and a funeral service was held the next day, according to local Spanish news outlets.

While the cause of his death was not revealed, it came just months after he broke the sad news to fans that he had been diagnosed with an illness, though details of what it was remain unclear.

What's going on?

It was in June of this year that de la Torre announced in a social media post to his fans that he had been diagnosed with a "serious illness" and, soon after, stepped away from the spotlight.

The move was understandable, but caught many by surprise as he looked otherwise healthy and vibrant, and was just beginning to break through in his budding acting career.

People noted:

His last post on Instagram was made on June 3, in which he could be seen celebrating Barceló Desalia 2024 in the Canary Islands with friends. At the time, de la Torre appeared to be healthy and could be seen sharing several photos smiling and enjoying the festivities at the event.

Many Spanish TV and film stars mourned the passing of their colleague.

“It breaks my heart to think I’ll never hear your voice again, but I’ll keep talking to you. Love you endlessly, José," wrote actor Luisa Martín.

Singer Pablo Alborán wrote in a social media post, "I can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m devastated by your departure. I’m sending kisses to all of your family and friends."

He added, "We’ll never forget you Jose. Wherever you are, I’m sure you’re wearing a Hawaiian shirt, a killer moustache, and those sunglasses like the ones we wore that day."

Young career cut short

De la Torre was definitely on the rise in the Spanish acting community and had already had several roles to his name in his early career.

People noted:

After the success of Toy Boy, he also starred in Vis a Vis: El Oasis and Amar es para Siempre. He also dabbled in theater, starring in Cuento de Navidad directed by Cristina García Pinto and Pablo García and Paisaje con Argonautas directed by Celia Dolci.

According to the New York Post, "De la Torre is survived by his parents, Antonio de la Torre Hidalgo and Maria Jose Delgado Espejo, and his sister, Marina."
