U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) just issued a warning to Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

According to Fox News, the warning is for Kennedy to stay away from polio vaccines.

McConnell is the current minority leader of the U.S. Senate, although he is about to relinquish this leadership position. He is not leaving the Senate, though, and it is expected that he will still play a major role among Senate Republicans, perhaps even as a committee leader.

Kennedy, meanwhile, is the man whom President-Elect Donald Trump has chosen to lead the Health and Human Services (HSS) department. Before he can get this position, however, he is going to have to be approved by the Senate.

McConnell's warning

McConnell issued his warning in a recent statement.

"Anyone seeking the Senate’s consent to serve in the incoming Administration would do well to steer clear of even the appearance of association with such efforts," McConnell wrote.

He added:

Like millions of families before them, my parents knew the pain and fear of watching their child struggle with the life-altering diagnosis of polio. From the age of two, normal life without paralysis was only possible for me because of the miraculous combination of modern medicine and a mother’s love. But for millions who came after me, the real miracle was the saving power of the polio vaccine.

Background

This all comes after a recent report from the New York Timeswhich highlighted the fact that one of Kennedy's personal attorneys once represented an individual who sought to rescind approval for the polio vaccine.

This would appear to be an attempt at guilt by association. Kennedy is well-known to have raised questions about various vaccines, but he has not indicated that he would seek to rescind approval for the polio vaccine.

According, McConnell's warning, to many, has come off as over the top.

The latest

As mentioned, Trump has chosen Kennedy to be the next HHS secretary, but, first, Kennedy needs to get the approval of the U.S. Senate.

This is why Kennedy, this week, is scheduled to meet with Senators to see if he can earn their supporter.

The Washington Examiner reports:

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to be the next secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, is set to head to Capitol Hill this week to meet with senators across multiple days. Kennedy is set to meet with lawmakers across four consecutive days, including with Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), who will chair the Senate HELP Committee next year, in addition to a meeting with the panel’s Republican staff on Thursday, according to a person familiar.

At the time of this writing, it is unclear what kind of support Kennedy has in the Senate.
