The Biden administration stunned Washington D.C. -- and millions of others across the country -- when it began auctioning off border wall materials for ridiculously low starting prices.

According to Fox News, the move quickly caught the attention of top Republicans, including Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), who ordered Defense Secretary Austin Lloyd and the Biden administration to preserve its records on the matter. 

Cotton, in a letter to the Defense Secretary, demanded "full accountability and transparency" on the matter.

While he acknowledged that it was President Joe Biden who halted construction of the border wall project put into place by then-President Donald Trump, his concern was the DoD's role in disposing of the materials.

What's going on?

Cotton held nothing back in his letter to Secretary Austin, demanding accountability for what the administration is attempting to do with the border wall materials.

"I write to demand full accountability and transparency from the Department of Defense about its role in the disposal of excess border wall materials from the first Trump administration," Cotton wrote.

Fox News' William La Jeunesse first reported that the border wall materials, leftover from Trump's administration, were being sold for "pennies on the dollar" and for "scrap."

Fox News noted:

According to a DOD official, Biden's administration has been disposing of excess border wall materials as was authorized by the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The official said that about 60% of these materials have been given to authorized recipients such as U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Texas and California.

They added that about 40% of the leftover materials were being auctioned off through government auction websites.

Prosecutions in order?

Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz was also fired up about the situation, suggesting that those behind the auctions could face DOJ prosecution as a result.

“To every official at DHS, or anywhere else, who approves selling off incredibly expensive portions of the border wall for $5 a piece, you are engaged in theft of government property and you should expect the DOJ to prosecute you," Cruz said this week. 

Social media users reacted in much of the same manner, with many calling for legal consequences for DHS and government officials behind the sale of the border wall materials.

"Everyone involved with that should immediately lose their jobs and possibly prosecuted. That is just ridiculous and uncalled for," one X user wrote.
