For the better part of three decades, television journalist Neil Cavuto has been a regular fixture on the Fox News channel.

However, members of the Republican-leaning network's audience were blindsided earlier this week when it was revealed that Cavuto has decided to resign. 

Cavuto decided not to renew his contract

According to the Washington Examiner, the host of "Your World with Neil Cavuto" had decided not to renew his contract despite being asked to do so by Fox News.

"Neil Cavuto’s illustrious career has been a master class in journalism, and we’re extremely proud of his incredible 28-year run with FOX News Media," the network said in a statement provided to the Examiner.

"His programs have defined business news and set the standard for the entire industry. We wish him a heartfelt farewell and all the best on his next chapter," the statement added.

The New York Post noted that Cavuto made his last appearance on Thursday and the host offered some parting words to his viewers.

Cavuto: "I got to do what I love"

"I got to do what I love to do — report the news. Not shout the news, not blast the news, not — well, call names. Just call balls and strikes," he said.

"I'm forever grateful to my bosses here, they've been very good to me these many years and offered a very generous opportunity for me to stay years more," he continued.

"That's pretty amazing considering the fact that, I don’t know, I might've missed a day or two here or there," Cavuto said in a joking reference to his health problems.

The host went on to thank those who helped work on his show, including those who had yet to be born when his career began.

Fellow host hails Cavuto as "a first-class human being"

Cavuto's departure was noted in a social media post by fellow Fox News host Howard Kurtz, who wrote, "Just saw that Neil Cavuto is leaving Fox after 28 years."

Just saw that Neil Cavuto is leaving Fox after 28 years. He has made enormous contributions, while battling serious health problems. But he is also a first-class human being who is gracious to everyone, whether they are high or low on the totem poll. We will miss him!

Kurtz praised his longtime colleague for having "made enormous contributions, while battling serious health problems."

"But he is also a first-class human being who is gracious to everyone, whether they are high or low on the totem [pole]. We will miss him!" Kurtz went on to add.
