Biden signs spending bill into law
President Joe Biden has officially signed the recently passed government spending bill into law.
Biden did so on Saturday, and the White House has released a statement on the matter, which can be found here.
This all happened very quickly after the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), passed H.R. 10545, the so-called American Relief Act, 2025.
As we will see, the Senate quickly passed the bill, under the direction of Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Biden quickly followed suit by signing it into law.
It's official
The House passed the bill on Friday. There is little doubt that this was a massive victory not for Republicans but for Democrats.
Breitbart News reported:
Zero Democrats voted against the bill. A staggering 196 voted for it, with one voting present and 14 missing the vote to begin their Christmas break early. One hundred seventy Republicans anxious to get home for Christmas as well voted for the bill, with 34 opposing it and 15 absences.
Suffice it to say that Republicans are outraged, and it is appearing as though Johnson's days as House speaker might just be numbered.
As for the contents of the bill, Breitbart reports:
The House once again punted their obligation to fund the government through the remainder of the fiscal year, this time until March 14, 2025, extending spending levels and policy priorities negotiated in February and March 2024 with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and President Joe Biden.
This is a big loss for President-Elect Donald Trump as he is about to enter the White House.
Biden makes it official
After passing through the House, the bill headed over to the U.S. Senate, which does have a very slim Democrat majority. This, however, was irrelevant for many Republicans who voted in favor of the bill.
Fox News reports:
Senators voted to pass a new version of a stopgap spending bill early Saturday morning after the midnight deadline for a partial government shutdown came and went. The Senate advanced the third version of a short-term spending bill by 85 to 11, and it will now head to President Biden's desk, who has already signaled that he will sign it.
The bill did make it to Biden's desk on Saturday, and he promptly signed it into law.
The White House released a statement, saying:
H.R. 10545, the “American Relief Act, 2025”, which provides fiscal year 2025 appropriations to Federal agencies through March 14, 2025, for continuing projects and activities of the Federal Government; provides disaster relief appropriations and economic assistance to farmers; extends the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018; and extends several expiring authorities.
It's hard to imagine that the Republicans just won the 2024 election. They certainly did not look like winners here.
