Liz Cheney accused of breaking the law with her J6 investigation
Ousted U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is alleged to have broken the law with some of her actions related to the events of Jan. 6, 2021.
The allegations came, according to the Daily Mail, from Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives.
They recently released a report exposing Cheney and other members of Congress who were involved with the Jan. 6 House committee.
This was the committee that was tasked with investigating the Capitol protest of Jan. 6, 2021, but that instead spent all of its time trying to pin blame for what happened on President-Elect Donald Trump.
Cheney broke "numerous federal laws"
In their report, the House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight alleged that Cheney broke "numerous federal laws."
The report, in part, reads:
Based on the evidence obtained by this Subcommittee, numerous federal laws were likely broken by Liz Cheney, the former Vice Chair of the January 6 Select Committee, and these violations should be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Among the alleged wrongdoing by Cheney is witness tampering.
The report states:
Evidence uncovered by the Subcommittee revealed that former Congresswoman Liz Cheney tampered with at least one witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, by secretly communicating with Hutchinson without Hutchinson’s attorney’s knowledge.
Hutchinson, of course, was one of the committee's "star" witnesses. Star is in quotation marks because Hutchinson turned out to be not credible. The House report notes:
Hutchinson is mentioned by name in the Select Committee’s Final Report no fewer than 185 times. Inexplicably, the Select Committee discredited the multitude of legitimate witnesses who, under oath, repeatedly refuted Hutchinson’s testimony. These legitimate witnesses include senior government officials and federal agents.
Cheney responds with defiance
The former congresswoman has already released a statement responding to the allegations, unsurprisingly denying them.
She wrote:
January 6th showed Donald Trump for who is really is. He watched television and refused for hours to instruct his supporters to stand down and leave. Their allegations do not reflect a review of the actual evidence, and are a malicious and cowardly assault on the truth. No reputable lawyer, legislator or judge would take this seriously.
Time will tell if this is indeed the case.
The big question is whether the incoming Trump administration will act on this report by, for example, launching an investigation into Cheney.
The answer is unclear. Trump has not indicated one way or another. It appears that he will leave such decision up to his incoming attorney general - Pam Bondi.
