Americans were left horrified in December of 1996 when 6-year-old child beauty contestant JonBenét Ramsey was found murdered in her Boulder, Colorado home.

While the little girl's killer has never been identified, CBS News' "48" recently suggested that some pieces of evidence might yet yield results.

DNA was found on victim's body

One of them is a sample of DNA from an unknown male which was found on the victim's body. Tests performed weeks after the murder excluded every member of JonBenét's family, including her then-9-year-old brother Burke.

Subsequent tests were performed in 2008, and they led the Boulder District Attorney to finally send a letter exonerating the Ramsey family.

Meanwhile, Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn issued a statement last year in which he held out the possibility that the DNA could still yield answers.

"The killing of JonBenét was an unspeakable crime and this tragedy has never left our hearts," the law enforcement official declared.

Other evidence includes ransom note and homemade garrote

"We are committed to following up on every lead and we are continuing to work with DNA experts and our law enforcement partners around the country until this tragic case is solved," Redfearn continued.

The chief went to declare that the investigation into JonBenét's killing "will always be a priority for the Boulder Police Department."

Another piece of evidence is the two-and-a-half-page ransom note which was found on a staircase at the Ramsey family's home.

It demanded $118,000 in exchange for JonBenét's return along with a warning not to call the authorities. The victim's mother defied that instruction and quickly called 911.

Also of interest is the homemade garrote which was apparently used to strangle JonBenét and discovered in a guest bedroom.

JonBenét's father expresses hope that daughter's killer can be found

For his part, JonBenét's father told "48 Hours" correspondent Erin Moriarty in an interview last month that he still has hope the culprit will be found.

"Finding the killer ... isn't gonna change my life at this point, but it will change the lives of my children and my grandchildren," John Ramsey said.

"This cloud needs to be removed from our family's head and this chapter closed for their benefit, so there is an answer," the now-elderly father went on to add.
