Trump Reportedly 100% Serious About Taking Greenland And Panama Canal
President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly “100% serious" about taking over Greenland and the Panam canal according to insiders close to Trump.
Trump recently raised the issue of US “ownership and control of Greenland” and turning it into a territory. Trump is also looking into taking back the Panama Canal because of the “ridiculous fees” charged to American ships.
This comes after Trump taunted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the “governor,” of the "great state of Canada."
While his comment on Trudeau was reportedly entirely a joke and Trump doesn't want to make Canada the 51st state, Trump's comments about the Panama Canal and Greenland are deadly serious.
These ideas were explored during Trump's 1st term in the White House but were ultimately sidelined for greater issues. Now with another term, the wheels are turning and Trump has huge plans.
Acquiring Greenland
Unlike past presidents that have spent billions pursuing interests that don't benefit the American people, Trump is going to focus on issues that will directly affect the security and economic prosperity of the American people as a whole.
Greenland is a semi-autonomous region of 56,000 mostly Inuit residents and a plan to acquire the region was developed during Trump’s final year in office.
Trump's administration is planning to win over the relatively poor residents of Greenland and get support for the plan and then negotiate with Denmark to essentially transfer or sell control of the territory.
Trump sees Greenland as a key piece to ensuring American national security and sees massive potential in having control over the resource-rich land mass.
Former Treasury Department official Thomas Dans told The New York Post "What we were trying to find at the end of the first Trump term was a three-way win-win-win deal. We were moving quickly on these things up until the final days. Our hope was the Biden administration would pick up on this."
The groundwork of that plan has already been done, now Trump has four years to make something truly monumental happen.
Retaking The Panama Canal
The Panama Canal, which is a critical artery for most of the world's shipping, was under the control of the United States until President Jimmy Carter returned the Canal Zone to Panama in 1979.
Now there are serious concerns that China is moving to take control of the canal as well as economic factors that have made it clear that the canal should never have been handed over to Panama by Carter all those years ago.
However, Trump's vision could run into problems as Panama’s president, José Raúl Mulino, posted a video declaring, “Every square meter of the canal belongs to Panama and will continue to."
Of course, Trump can cite the current treaty that allows the US to use military force if the canal is under threat of no longer being neutral.
Should China continue its encroachment and Panama do nothing to stop it, Trump has every right to use force to retake the canal which was built by the United States to facilitate trade. And if the Panamanian government wants to stand in the way, they will be kicked out quickly.
