Michelle Obama intends to skip Trump's inauguration after missing Carter's funeral

Former first lady Michelle Obama was noticeably absent from the late former President Jimmy Carter's state funeral service last week and is anticipated to miss another major event next week that she'd otherwise be expected to attend.

According to her office, Michelle is planning to skip President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony on Jan. 20, Breitbart reported.

No explanation was given for why the Democratic former first lady won't be at Trump's swearing-in, but the most likely reason is her undisguised utter contempt and disdain for the incoming Republican president.

Won't be at Trump's inauguration

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that it had received confirmation from her office that Michelle Obama was not planning to attend President-elect Trump's inauguration, though her husband, former President Barack Obama, would be there.

In a brief statement, Obama's office said, "Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration."

The office declined to provide any further explanation for why the former first lady would eschew tradition and not be at Trump's swearing-in -- though The Post noted that the tradition was first broken in 2021 when then-outgoing President Trump and first lady Melania Trump did not attend President Joe Biden's inauguration.

Michelle's absence from Trump's inauguration will be all the more noticeable given that all of the other living current and former presidents and first ladies will be there.

The Post and the Associated Press have confirmed that, in addition to Joe and Jill Biden, former first couples Bill and Hillary Clinton along with George and Laura Bush will be in attendance at the ceremony next week.

Michelle's "scheduling conflict" and Carter's funeral

This will not be the first major formal event Michelle Obama will miss this year, as it was widely reported that she skipped the late former President Carter's funeral service at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. last week.

Politico reported that, according to an anonymous source described as being "familiar with her schedule," the former first lady was unable to attend because of a "scheduling conflict" that had her in Hawaii.

Everyone else managed to clear their schedules, though, including her husband Barack, who was seated next to and chatted amicably with the Trumps, as well as the Bushes and Clintons and Bidens,

Her spokesperson did forward a message on her behalf, however, and said, "Mrs. Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from the remarkable former President."

Is there another reason why she didn't go to Carter's funeral?

Lacking any further details, Michelle Obama's supposed "scheduling conflict" that prevented her from attending Carter's funeral seems a bit suspect.

Indeed, the possible real reason why she wasn't there was casually mentioned in the Politico report, which revealed that per the seating arrangements for the funeral service, Michelle would have been placed right next to Trump.
