Judge gives Trump win in Georgia case
A judge has just given President-Elect Donald Trump a win in the criminal case that is taking place in Georgia.
The Associated Press reports that an appellate court has upheld the dismissal of some of the charges that had been brought against Trump.
This, however, is not the end of the matter - at least, technically speaking.
At the moment, the future of this case remains unclear.
Here's what's going on:
This all has to do with the criminal case that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) has brought against Trump. This is the case in which Willis alleges that Trump and his associates committed crimes when they attempted to challenge Goergia's results in the 2020 presidential election.
It would be an understatement to say that this case has been a disaster straight from the start. First, legal experts raised doubts about the legitimacy of the charges, then several scandals broke with Willis at the center.
Willis has since been removed from the case, although she is trying to get the Georgia Supreme Court to reverse this ruling. Trump and his team are currently trying to prevent the court from even hearing Willis's appeal.
But, this is a separate matter from the charges themselves.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee is the one who is overseeing the case, and, back in March, he tossed several of the charges. This decision has been appealed to the Georgia Court of Appeals.
The latest: "another win for Trump"
The appellate court has now upheld McAfee's decision.
ABC News reports:
A Georgia appeals court on Friday upheld a lower court's ruling that dismissed six of the charges brought in the 2020 Fulton County election interference case against Donald Trump and other co-defendants . . . Trump originally face 13 counts in the indictment, and following the dismissal faced 10.
The outlet goes on to explain that these charges were dismissed because the judge "found they were legally deficient and failed to provide enough details." The appellate court agrees.
It wrote:
We find that the indictment fails to include enough detail to sufficiently apprise the defendants of what they must be prepared to meet so that they can intelligently prepare their defense.
Trump and his legal team are referring to this as "another win for President Trump." Now, we will have to see if Trump gets some other wins - such as by keeping Willis off of the case. We should know the answer soon enough.
