Teenager outraged by TikTok ban charged with arson for targeting Republican congressman's office
A 19-year-old from Wisconsin set a Republican congressman's office on fire because of the TikTok ban.
The suspect targeted the office of Rep. Glenn Grothman early Sunday morning as TikTok briefly shut down.
Grothman's office is located in a strip mall in Fon Du Lac. The building was unoccupied at the time and nobody was injured.
Republican targeted over TikTok
Police responded to the blaze around 1 a.m. Sunday and used fire extinguishers to keep the fire controlled until firefighters arrived.
The 19-year-old suspect was found nearby, watching the blaze. He told cops that he started the fire "in response to recent talks of a TikTok ban."
The fire caused some damage to the building's exterior, but there were no reported injuries.
The Menasha suspect, who was not named, is being held in the Fon Du Lac County Jail for arson.
"Acts of violence, in any form are not tolerated, and we remain committed to protecting the safety and well-being of our community," Chief Aaron Goldstein said. "I am thankful for the swift response of our Officers in helping knock down the fire and also locating the suspect of this arson.”
TikTok goes dark - briefly
The dramatic incident came as TikTok shut down over the weekend in response to a bi-partisan ban enacted by Congress. The popular short video app was back online within hours Sunday as President Trump pledged to "save" the platform, which has some 170 million users.
"I'm asking companies not to let TikTok stay dark! I will issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the law's prohibitions take effect, so that we can make a deal to protect our national security," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump used TikTok to successfully amplify his message to young voters while campaigning for his re-election. He defended the app - used by millions of business owners and others - at a victory rally Sunday night ahead of his inauguration.
"We have no choice. We have to save a lot of jobs," Trump told a crowd in Washington D.C.
Many Republicans oppose Trump on TikTok
Trump's support of TikTok has put him at odds with most Republicans who want to ban the Chinese-owned app for national security reasons.
To resolve those concerns, Trump has suggested a joint venture giving the United States 50% ownership.
“We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive,” TikTok Policy wrote on X.
“It’s a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States,” the statement added.
