Trump signs order renaming Alaska's Mt. Denali as Mt. McKinley and changing Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America
President Donald Trump was exceptionally busy on the inaugural day of his second term in office, unveiling dozens of executive orders amid the other pomp and ceremony.
One of those orders involved the renaming of two major U.S. landmarks, including the tallest mountain in North America and the largest non-ocean body of water adjacent to the continent, according to the New York Post.
Trump ordered Alaska's Mt. Denali to be renamed Mt. McKinley, the peak's prior name for nearly a century, and ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be rechristened as the Gulf of America.
Honoring America's greatness
During President Trump's Inaugural Address, he spent a few moments outlining just a few of the dozens of executive orders he intended to sign throughout the day, including the renaming of two significant geographical features.
"A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America," Trump said to great applause, "and we will restore the name of a great president, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley, where it should be and where it belongs."
The Post noted that the Alaskan mountain was named in honor of former President William McKinley for nearly a century before former President Barack Obama formally adopted the indigenous tribe's name of Denali for the peak. As for the Gulf of Mexico, Trump had previously said the Gulf of America had a "beautiful ring" to the name and was "appropriate" since the Gulf benefits and is used by the entire North American continent and not just the nation of Mexico.
Renaming Mt. McKinley
In an executive order, President Trump stated, "It is in the national interest to promote the extraordinary heritage of our Nation and ensure future generations of American citizens celebrate the legacy of our American heroes. The naming of our national treasures, including breathtaking natural wonders and historic works of art, should honor the contributions of visionary and patriotic Americans in our Nation’s rich past."
That included the renaming of Mt. McKinley in honor of 25th President William McKinley, who "heroically led our Nation to victory in the Spanish-American War. Under his leadership, the United States enjoyed rapid economic growth and prosperity, including an expansion of territorial gains for the Nation."
"President McKinley championed tariffs to protect U.S. manufacturing, boost domestic production, and drive U.S. industrialization and global reach to new heights," the order continued. "He was tragically assassinated in an attack on our Nation’s values and our success, and he should be honored for his steadfast commitment to American greatness."
"In 1917, the country officially honored President McKinley through the naming of North America’s highest peak. Yet after nearly a century, President Obama’s administration, in 2015, stripped the McKinley name from federal nomenclature, an affront to President McKinley’s life, his achievements, and his sacrifice," the order added. "This order honors President McKinley for giving his life for our great Nation and dutifully recognizes his historic legacy of protecting America’s interests and generating enormous wealth for all Americans."
Trump's executive order gave the Interior Secretary 30 days to officially rename the mountain, including in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), but called for the surrounding area to retain the name of Denali National Park and Preserve, and further directed the secretary to work closely with Native Alaska tribes to "adopt names for landmarks to honor the history and culture of the Alaskan people."
Rechristening the Gulf of America
President Trump's executive order also called for renaming the Gulf of America as "The area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America. The Gulf was a crucial artery for America’s early trade and global commerce."
The order noted the vast size and abundant resources of the Gulf, both in food and energy, and how vital it is for commerce, and said, "The Gulf will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping America’s future and the global economy, and in recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation’s economy and its people, I am directing that it officially be renamed the Gulf of America."
Thus, Trump ordered the Interior Secretary to take the "appropriate actions" within 30 days to officially rename the Gulf and update the GNIS, and further ordered the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to "provide guidance to ensure all federal references to the Gulf of America, including on agency maps, contracts, and other documents and communications shall reflect its renaming."
