In the days leading up to his inauguration, President Donald Trump hosted Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) for a visit to his Mar-a-Lago resort in South Florida for a discussion on possible areas of common agreement, and all initial reports suggested the meeting went well.

On Monday, Fetterman appeared on "The View" and shocked the liberal co-hosts by confirming that his meeting with Trump had been a "positive experience" and involved a "straight-up conversation," according to Fox News.

The Democratic senator from Pennsylvania further threw the Trump-hating co-hosts for a loop when he described the Republican president as "kind" and "cordial" and disavowed the sort of "freaking out" about everything Trump says and does that so many of his fellow Democrats -- "The View" co-hosts included -- have engaged in for years.

Fetterman not surprised by Trump's first week in office

During his Monday appearance on "The View," Sen. Fetterman was initially asked for his take on President Trump's first week in office, to which the senator replied, "Honestly, I haven’t been surprised by anything now. I mean, he’s been doing essentially what he actually campaigned on."

"He announced he is going to pardon the January 6 individuals. He is absolutely going to go after the border. So there’s a lot of things that he’s already ran on," the senator continued. "I criticize a lot of it, and I don’t agree with everything either, but it’s undeniable he actually ran on that and been really upfront. He’s like, ‘I am your retribution,’ and, you know, he’s kind of making those moves."

Fetterman went on to note that some of his fellow Democrats "freaked out" about Trump's initial actions -- he compared them to cats chasing a laser pointer -- but insisted, "I’m not that guy. I’m not going to be that Democrat. For me, you know, there’s things I’m going to agree with, I’m going to disagree with, but I’m in the business of finding wins for Pennsylvania and for the nation, and engaging the president -- I see that as doing my job."

Fetterman discussed his "positive experience" with the "kind" and "cordial" Trump

Asked about his recent meeting with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Sen. Fetterman said, "I think overall it was a positive experience. I mean, he was -- he was kind. He was cordial. It wasn’t in a -- in any kind of theater, it wasn't trying to get your picture taken to put something out on social media. It was really just a conversation."

He revealed that he and his wife Gisele spoke with Trump "for more than an hour" and found common ground on a few issues, then reiterated, "Overall, it was just a straight-up conversation" that fits in with his general "rule" to engage with anybody regardless of party who is "playing it straight."

Fetterman also pushed back against the criticism he'd received for meeting Trump at Mar-a-Lago by suggesting that it was "pretty reasonable to have a conversation" with the incoming president and that it was, in his view, "part of the job" of being a U.S. senator.

Addressing the program's viewers, the senator added, "I hope, maybe you [who] are watching, you’re tired of just the venom and the hate, and it's like, I'd want more bipartisan kinds of things," and further noted that while he will agree and disagree with various moves by the president, he will "pick my fights" and not add to the "cheap hate online" by reflexively attacking Trump over everything.

Trump was "impressed" after his "fascinating" meeting with Fetterman

Meanwhile, the Washington Examiner reported that President Trump, following the Mar-a-Lago meeting, said of Sen. Fetterman, "It was a totally fascinating meeting. He’s a fascinating man, and his wife is lovely. They were both up, and I couldn’t be more impressed," and further stated, "He’s a commonsense person. He’s not liberal or conservative. He’s just a commonsense person, which is beautiful."

"It’s been amazing, and there’s been cooperation within the Republicans and a lot of the Democrats. I will say that Sen. Fetterman was very impressive to me, really impressive," he continued of Fetterman's expressed openness to working with the GOP on certain issues, and added, "He really was impressive, and I’m glad I got to speak to him. And he loves Pennsylvania, and he loves our country."

What Fetterman had to say about the meeting during his appearance this week on "The View" was remarkably similar to what he had to say when initially questioned about it by reporters a couple of weeks ago.

Fetterman, who'd joked about being appointed by Trump as the "Pope of Greenland," said at that time, "President Trump invited me to meet, and I accepted. I’m the senator for all Pennsylvanians -- not just Democrats in Pennsylvania," and added, "I’ve been clear that no one is my gatekeeper. I will meet with and have a conversation with anyone if it helps me deliver for Pennsylvania and the nation."
