WH Press Secretary urges quick votes on nominees to address egg shortage and grocery prices
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt urged the Senate to quickly confirm President Donald Trump's nominees in order for the administration to address the current egg shortage and grocery price hikes even as Democrats began to criticize Trump for continued high prices.
"This is an example of why it's so incredibly important that the Senate moves swiftly to confirm all of President Trump's nominees, including his nominee for the United States Department of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins, who is already speaking with Kevin Hassett, who's leading the economic team here at the White House, on how we can address the egg shortage in this country," Leavitt told reporters Tuesday at her first White House press briefing.
Leavitt noted that prices rose dramatically under the Biden administration, so to blame Trump when he's only had nine days in office is a stretch at best.
Democrats passing the buck
That hasn't stopped Democrats from trying, though.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) complained in an X post on Friday, "The price of eggs and the cost of living was supposed to go down. Not up."
"Trump’s ‘concepts of a plan’ at work," Suhas Subramanyam chimed in with a photo claiming a dozen eggs was priced at nearly $9.
There was no verification of the photo or where it came from. The average egg price as of January 15 was $4.15 a dozen, but prices vary depending on location and what kind of eggs are being purchased.
Granted, the price is up more than $1.50 since December 2023, but $8.00 is a bit high for most areas.
Avian flu has caused more than 20 million egg-laying hens to be killed in the fourth quarter of 2024, leading to egg shortages in many areas.
Biden's flaws
The White House press office has sought to show that the severity of the outbreak has not been helped by Biden's response.
"The Biden Administration’s slow and ineffective response to the avian influenza outbreak, which began in 2022, has negatively impacted U.S. poultry producers, and his USDA forced farmers to massively cut their livestock populations," White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly told Fox Digital on Monday.
Kelly said that Trump and his nominee for Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins have plans to take "bold, decisive action" to improve conditions and tamp down the bird flu epidemic.
As Vice President J.D. Vance pointed out, it's going to take more than a week to fix four years of horrible policies that have led us to our current state.
"Prices are going to come down, but it's going to take a little bit of time, right?" Vance said. "The president has been president for all of five days. I think that, in those five days, he's accomplished more than Joe Biden did in four years."
