Ryan Whyte Maloney, a musician and vocalist who reached the final round of Blake Shelton's 2014 The Voice competition, passed away at the age of 44.

On Tuesday, the news media received confirmation of his death from the Clark County Coroner in Las Vegas, as PEOPLE reported.

The coroner determined that Maloney committed suicide after suffering a gunshot wound to the head.

According to his website, Maloney began playing the guitar, violin, cello, and drums at the age of nine after being born in Traverse City, Michigan, in 1981.

Career Movement

There he began composing music and eventually created the band Indulge, which released 2005's "Tomorrow's Another Day."

Produced by Sean O'Dwyer—who has worked with Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash, Emerson Drive, Blink-182, and many more—where I've Been is Maloney's solo effort following ten years of playing in that band.

Before becoming a season 6 contestant on "The Voice," Maloney promoted his CD and performed concerts across the nation from 2010 to 2013.

After blind auditioning with Journey's "Lights," Maloney got a four-chair slot on the NBC singing competition. The show has launched many careers, even for those who don't win or make it to the final rounds.

More From The Voice

Being on Shelton's team allowed him to compete in two rounds of battles and reach the final five, something that was a feat in and of itself.

During his time competing on The Voice, he recorded pieces such as "Lights," "What's Love Got To Do With It" (Tina Turner), "Easy" (Rascal Flatts), and "Second Chance" (Shinedown). The season finale would see his return for a performance.

His subsequent singles and albums featured songs like "Don't Put Me in a Box," "Love With Nowhere to Go," "Sleepwalk," and "Toast to Tonight."
