Rolling Stones muse and singer/actress Marianne Faithfull dies at age 78
Marianne Faithfull, who inspired and wrote several of the Rolling Stones' biggest hits as well as having a music and acting career in her own right, died Thursday at age 78 at her London home with her family in attendance.
"It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull. Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed," a spokesperson for Faithfull confirmed to Fox News Digital.
Faithfull's first big hit, "As Tears Go By," released in 1965, was one of the first songs written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
While dating Mick Jagger in the late 60s, she wrote two of the Stones' biggest early hits, "Wild Horses" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want," although she didn't get what she felt was proper credit at the time.
Her history
Faithfull also dated Richards and David Bowie. She was married three times and had a son Nicholas Dunbar with her first husband John Dunbar.
In her later years, she dated her manager Francois Ravard; the two separated in 2009 after 15 years together.
By the late 1960s, Faithfull had become addicted to heroin and was sometimes homeless. She also had other health issues over the years including bulemia, breast cancer and emphesyma.
As to what actually killed her, that information has not been made public. No cause of death was given by her spokesperson or family.
Her comeback
After battling her addiction, Faithfull released an album, Broken English, in 1979 that showed her comeback.
In addition to her musical career, Faithfull also pursued acting roles.
She had a role in Jean-Luc Godard's "Made In U.S.A." and stage roles in "Hamlet" and Chekhov's "Three Sisters."
She was cast as God in the British show "Absolutely Fabulous," and she played the role without flinching.
Most recent credits
Most recently, Faithfull lent her voice to the 2021 remake of "Dune" and 2023's "Wild Summon."
Her career spanned more than 60 years in spite of all her challenges, and many fellow celebrities paid tribute to her on social media following the announcement of her death.
