The solitary Democratic senator to vote in favor of confirming Pam Bondi as the next attorney general, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, has been the subject of online criticism.

In the wake of his departure from progressives on matters such as immigration and support for Israel, Fetterman has made an effort to collaborate with Republicans, as Newsweek.

He was the first Senate Democrat to meet with President Donald Trump following his election victory.

Nevertheless, he has denied allegations that he is contemplating a political change to become a Republican.

What to Know

The Senate voted 54-46 on Tuesday to confirm Bondi, who previously served as the attorney general of Florida.

Fetterman voted in favor of confirming Trump's nominee to lead the Department of Justice, along with all of the other Republican senators.

Fetterman told reporters that he supported Bondi because of her qualifications, even though she is not his "ideal" candidate.

Democrats were worried that Bondi, who was an attorney for Trump's 2020 election challenge, would not keep the Department of Justice independent.

Bondi refused to state that Trump lost the 2020 election when she was asked about it during her confirmation hearing.

Previous Actions

This isn't the first time that Fetterman has stepped out of line with his party members. Likely part of the appeal in what was an extremely close race, Fetterman has straddled the line between the parties well.

In a January interview with the Pennsylvania Capital-Star, Fetterman stated that he would support some of Trump's Cabinet nominees.

He also mentioned that his votes would be a "informed choice" and part of his responsibilities as a senator.

What People Are Saying

Progressive podcast host Dash Dobrofsky posted on social media about the senator's decision, saying "John Fetterman just voted to confirm Pam Bondi—an election denier—as America's next attorney general. He was the only Democrat to support her nomination. What is happening to Fetterman? Very disappointing."

Progressive political commentator Jack Cocchiarella also weighed in, saying: "John Fetterman just voted to confirm Pam Bondi. The election denier. The election denier who will let Trump break the law. The election denier who will illegitimately prosecute Democrats. What the F*** is wrong with John Fetterman?"

However, on the other side of the aisle, conservative X user Darien Rourke wrote: "Starting to think John Fetterman might be the only good Democrat. Which begs the question, why is he still a Democrat?"

As for Fetterman, he weighed in on the Bondi vote, saying "She's qualified, and it's not my ideal pick, but it turns out [former Attorney General] Merrick Garland wasn't anyone's ideal one either."
