State Department announces Panama dropping canal fees for US government vessels

Only weeks into President Donald Trump's administration, and massive deals for the American people and American businesses are already being hammered out abroad.

According to Newsmax, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, through the State Department, announced that there will no longer be fees for U.S. government vessels traveling through the Panama Canal.

Zapping the fees for U.S. government vessels traveling through the canal will reportedly save the government -- and tax payers -- millions of dollars per year.

The bombshell announcement came shortly after Secretary Rubio met with Panama President Jose Raul Mulino on Sunday during a trip to Central America.

The announcement

The welcoming news was announced through the State Department's official X account.

"U.S. government vessels can now transit the Panama Canal without charge fees, saving the U.S. government millions of dollars a year," the State Department wrote.

Last month, Trump made headlines after threatening to take the canal back if Panama refused to stop charging insane fees for ships to pass through the canal.

"If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question," Trump said at the time.

Newsmax noted:

Mulino has dismissed Trump's threat that the U.S. retake control of the canal, which it largely built. The U.S. administered territory surrounding the passage for decades, but the U.S. and Panama signed two accords in 1977 that paved the way for the canal's return to full Panamanian control.

Social media reacts

Many social media users cheered the newly struck deal, pointing out how nice it is to have a president and an administration that's not afraid to strike a good deal for the American people.

"It's the Art of the Deal in action! Promises made, promises kept! Another 'Win' for America's taxpayers thanks to President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This is a very big deal!" one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "Awesome. The amount of progress. The speed at which things are improving for America are hard to keep up with."

Late-breaking reports emerged Thursday suggesting that Panama did not, in fact, agree to such a deal. Only time will tell how it all shakes out.
