DOJ orders prosecutors to drop charges against NYC Dem Mayor Eric Adams
New York City's Democratic Mayor Eric Adams was facing some pretty serious corruption charges, but he appears to have escaped that legal battle unscathed. Could his recent closeness with Donald Trump be responsible for him getting off the hook?
According to The Hill, "A top Department of Justice (DOJ) official ordered federal prosecutors to dismiss corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D), who had cozied up with President Trump in recent months as his bribery trial set for April neared."
In a short memo, acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove said that America's DOJ reached the decision to dismiss the counts without assessing the strength of the case.
Still, Bove indicated that those who filed the charges did nothing wrong.
Case dropped
Bove said that the charges needed to be dismissed because the case "improperly interfered" with Adams's 2025 campaign for reelection.
Acting Deputy Attorney General Bove also alluded to Donald Trump's administration's efforts to end "weaponization" in the federal government as a reason to wind down the case.
Donald Trump was extremely critical of the Democrats using "lawfare" to enact a "witch hunt" against him that was designed to put Donald Trump in prison and be kept out of the White House.
Despite all of Trump's criticism of the Democrats' "lawfare," he hasn't been shy about using his newly acquired Presidential powers to humiliate his enemies such as Joe Biden, Letitia James, Alvin Bragg, and Antony Blinken.
The charges
Prosecutors alleged that, starting in 2014, Eric Adams sought and accepted "improper valuable benefits" such as luxury international travel from well-off foreign businesspeople and at least one Turkish government official who was seeking to influence him.
Eric Adams is accused of escalating his behavior by 2018, when he "'not only accepted but sought' illegal campaign contributions to his 2021 mayoral campaign, in addition to 'other things of value' from foreign nationals, according to charging papers."
Trump weighs in
Even before the Department of Justice dropped the charges against Eric Adams, his new friend President Donald Trump has indicated that he would "look at" a pardon for the Mayor of New York City.
"I think that he was treated pretty unfairly," Trump said.
Eric Adams has raised eyebrows for how close he's gotten to Trump recently. Despite Adams being the Democratic mayor of perhaps the most liberal city in the country, he's become pretty close with Donald Trump, a Republican.
Adams was even seen with Donald Trump at a recent UFC event.
Some are accusing Adams of cozying up to Trump because Trump was one of the few people who could make Adams's legal problems go away.
Do you think that the DOJ was right to drop the case? Or did Adams only catch this break because of his newfound friendship with President Donald Trump?
