Google caves to Trump by renaming Mount Denali
It would appear that Google is fully on board with President Donald Trump's recent geographical name changes.
This, according to the New York Post, includes Trump's decision to ever Mount Denali back to its old name - Mount McKinley.
Others, though, have been less willing to accept Trump's name changes.
In this case, many lawmakers came out in opposition to Trump's Mount Denali name change.
"Restoring . . . American Greatness"
This is all part of the Trump administration's plan to restore "names that honor American greatness." This one one of the first executive moves that Trump made upon entering the Oval Office.
Regarding Mount McKinley, specifically, the order reads:
President William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, heroically led our Nation to victory in the Spanish-American War. Under his leadership, the United States enjoyed rapid economic growth and prosperity, including an expansion of territorial gains for the Nation. President McKinley championed tariffs to protect U.S. manufacturing, boost domestic production, and drive U.S. industrialization and global reach to new heights. He was tragically assassinated in an attack on our Nation’s values and our success, and he should be honored for his steadfast commitment to American greatness. In 1917, the country officially honored President McKinley through the naming of North America’s highest peak.
The order goes on to note how it was the administration of President Barack Obama that "stripped the McKinley name from federal nomenclature," a move that Trump called "an affront to President McKinley’s life, his achievements, and his sacrifice."
Trump called for this to be reversed.
"Within 30 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of the Interior shall, consistent with 43 U.S.C. 364 through 364f, reinstate the name 'Mount McKinley,'" the order reads.
The backlash
Some, such as Google, have accepted the name change. Others, however, have resisted. This would include Alaska lawmakers.
Outlets report:
The Alaska House voted Monday to adopt a resolution urging President Donald Trump to reconsider his executive order renaming the tallest peak in North America.
More recently, Alaska's U.S. representatives came out in opposition to the name change.
Fox News reports:
Following President Donald Trump's move to change the name of the tallest mountain in North America to Mount McKinley, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, has once again introduced a measure to designate the mountain as Denali.
It is unclear what kind of support Murkowski has, in Congress, for her measure. It is probably safe to say that most Republicans are going to stand with Trump on this one, and it is the Republicans who currently control Congress.
