The U.S. Senate just confirmed Kashyap "Kash" Patel as the next director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Senate, according to Breitbart News, did so on Thursday.

51-49

Patel did end up having enough votes to get by, with the final tally being 51 to 49. There was some concern, beforehand that he might not.

The Republicans do have a 53 to 47 majority in the upper chamber, which means that Patel, as expected, did not receive the support of all Senate Republicans.

The two Republicans who joined their Democratic colleagues in voting against Patel are U.S. Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).

To the surprise of some, Patel did get the support of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY). What makes this surprising is that Patel is one of Trump's more controversial picks, and McConnell has already voted against some of Trump's other controversial nominees.

Nonetheless, McConnell backed him.

Already sworn in

Following the Senate vote, Patel was sworn in as the next FBI director.

The Washington Times reports:

Kash Patel was sworn in as the new FBI director in a brief ceremony following a narrow Senate confirmation vote. In a ceremony Friday at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, Attorney General Pam Bondi administered the oath of office. Mr. Patel, who is the first person of color to head the FBI, was surrounded by his girlfriend and family standing beside him.

Now, it is off to the races for Patel.

"Bring it on"

Patel, according to Fox News, addressed the media after he was sworn in as FBI director.

He, in part, said:

Look, I know the media's in here, and if you have a target, the target's right here. It is not the men and women at the FBI. You have written everything you possibly can about me that's fake, malicious, slanderous, and defamatory. Keep it coming. Bring it on, but leave the men and women of the FBI out of it. They deserve better,.

Patel went on to say that, under his leadership, there will be "a singular system of justice for all Americans, and there will be accountability."

He added:

We will uphold the Constitution. We will uphold ourselves to the Constitution. The men and women at the FBI — I have your back because you have the backs of the American people. You will be held to the same high standard. Any deviation from that standard will not be tolerated at this Federal Bureau of Investigation.
