Wildfire fire chief gets fired
Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley has just been fired.
Fox News reports that Los Angeles, California Mayor, Karen Bass, terminated Crowley on Friday.
This appears to be a continuation of the fallout from the wildfires that swept through California in recent months.
Crowley, as we will see, is not going down without a fight.
The firing
Bass released a statement on Friday indicating that she had fired Crowley. .
She began, "Acting in the best interests of Los Angeles’ public safety, and for the operations of the Los Angeles Fire Department, I have removed Kristin Crowley as Fire Chief."
Bass then went into more detail about what specifically led to her decision, writing:
We know that 1,000 firefighters that could have been on duty on the morning the fires broke out were instead sent home on Chief Crowley’s watch. Furthermore, a necessary step to an investigation was the President of the Fire Commission telling Chief Crowley to do an after action report on the fires. The Chief refused. These require her removal. The heroism of our firefighters – during the Palisades fire and every single day – is without question. Bringing new leadership to the fire department is what our city needs.
In conjunction with the statement, Bass also held a press conference on the matter. There, Fox reports that she tried to clear herself from blame.
Per the outlet:
In a noon press conference on Friday, Bass also denied cutting the department's budget, reiterating that Crowley had been fired because 1,000 firefighters had been sent home on the first day of the fires on Jan. 7 and that she had later refused to do an after-action report.
Bass has now appointed former Chief Deputy Ronnie Villanueva as interim fire chief.
Crowley responds
Crowley is now alleging that Bass is essentially making her a scapegoat, trying to place all of the blame on her.
The Daily Mail reports on how Crowley's termination was carried out by Bass.
The outlet quotes a source as saying:
Bass and two of her lawyers walked into Crowley’s office today. She said "Our relationship is not working out,” and fired her. Not even “you didn’t do a good job.” Not, “you failed me.” It took two minutes and she was done. There was no emoting. She had two lawyers with her. She’s covering her a**.
Crowley, then, apparently said that she is packing up.
The source went on to say:
She wasn’t shocked, but she was sad of course. From what I could tell, she thought there’s nothing else she could do. She may change her mind, but that was her initial reaction.’ She fired the only person doing anything about the fires.
