Biden-appointed federal judge blocks Trump spending freeze
A federal judge appointed in 2022 by then-President Joe Biden has indefinitely blocked President Donald Trump's federal spending freeze, arguing that it is too catastrophic for a host of non-profits that depend on federal funding to operate.
U.S. District Judge Loren AliKhan agreed with the National Council of Nonprofits that the freeze violated the First Amendment and was beyond the constitutional authority of the Office of Managment and Budget (OMB).
AliKhan said that the nonprofits submitted a "mountain of evidence" about the disruption the freeze was having on their operations and that the Trump administration did not provide a "reasonable explanation" of why the freeze was needed.
Trump officials said the freeze was to “safeguard valuable taxpayer resources.”
"Breathtaking"
“The scope of power OMB seeks to claim is ‘breathtaking,’ and its ramifications are massive,” she asserted.
But let's consider why such a move is "massive" and "breathtaking," shall we?
What these leftist judges don't want to consider is that the federal government now plays a role in American life that would make the founding fathers shudder.
When the Constitution was written, there was no federal taxation, and the only federal agencies that existed were the Treasury, State Department, and War Department. Shortly thereafter, the Post Office and the Attorney General's office were established.
While one might argue correctly that some aspects of society take care of the least of these much better than happened at the nation's founding, and that nonprofits are responsible for much of this care, the current setup still goes far beyond anything that would have been supported at the nation's founding.
Out of control
The reason a federal spending freeze would be so devastating is because federal spending is way out of control.
Trump wants to review the spending to see what nonprofits are actually doing good and necessary work and which ones are wasting federal dollars--taxpayer dollars--on ridiculous nonsense.
And let's face it--there are a lot of nonprofits doing that. Some of them are doing things that are nice but not really needed, while others are spending most of their operating budget on administrative costs--in other words, paying themselves to do next to nothing.
Trump can save taxpayers a lot of money by figuring out which are which and then cutting the unnecessary or inefficient ones.
This is money the country needs to start getting itself out of debt and avoiding tax increases that could be just as devastating as the cuts are said to be.
Everyone knows the federal government is more bloated than a dead fish washed up on shore. Shaking up the status quo may be painful in the short term, but will reap dividends later on.
