Gas company issued five 'red tags' at Gene Hackman's Santa Fe home
The mystery behind Gene Hackman's death continues to deepen as new revelations are springing up by the day.
Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 63, were found dead alongside one of their dogs over a week ago at their Santa Fe, New Mexico home. Initially, friends and family suspected that a carbon monoxide leak or a gas leak could have killed them.
While authorities quickly ruled out those possible causes, the Sun reported this week that the local gas company tested their house and found "red tags" that might possibly offer some insight as to what could have happened.
Still, authorities are scrambling to piece together a timeline of events, working "backwards," to determine how the award-winning actor, his wife, and one of their dogs perished.
What's going on?
The gas company tested equipment in their Santa Fe home and police reported the utility service issued five "red tags," with one of them being a small amount of gas detected from a leak on one of the burners on a stove.
They said that the amount leaking registered "0.03 per cent gas in the air," which authorities said was not enough to be a "lethal" amount.
"The other four red tags were for code enforcement violations - not involving gas leaks or carbon monoxide - involving a water heater and gas log lighters installed in three fireplaces," Santa Fe police said.
Overall, the New Mexico Gas Company made "no significant findings" of any gas leaks in the home that could have been the culprit behind their unfortunate deaths.
The company told the sheriff's office Monday that while there were "no significant findings" in the investigation for gas leaks or carbon monoxide, they issued five red tags at Hackman and Arakawa's home, the sheriff's office wrote in a news release.https://t.co/yk8GCnn4KR

Their bodies were discovered by a "neighborhood caretaker" who spotted the couple's bodies through a window. They immediately made a "frantic" 911 call to report the situation.
Police have ruled out foul play for the most part, but hinted that the investigation could possibly turn up evidence of that, though it's unclear why police seem to be wavering on that.
Family statement
Hackman's daughters and granddaughter released a statement on their passing.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy," they wrote.
"He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us he was always just Dad and Grandpa," adding that they will "miss them sorely."
Only time will tell if police get to the bottom of what happened so that the family can have some level of closure.
