'Destroy our democracy': Liberal professor apologizes for post appearing to call for Trump's violent overthrow
A liberal law professor is apologizing after he was caught advocating a violent insurrection to save "democracy" from President Trump.
Despite being an expert in criminal law, University of California Los Angeles professor Peter Arenella did not hesitate before posting about a military coup against Trump, calling it the "only hope" for America.
"At this point, my only hope for the U.S. to avoid becoming an ally to Russia is a violent resistance by our military. Tragic to say that because the military is trained to avoid any politically motivated intervention," he wrote.
Professor calls for coup
Without any evidence, Arenella suggested that Trump's purge of woke generals was motivated by the fear of the very scenario Arenella described.
"Ultimately, we will get what we deserve by giving Trump a second chance to destroy our democracy," Arenella said.
Arenella did not acknowledge the twisted logic behind calling for armed resistance - in the name of "democracy" - against a president who won the popular vote.
Later, the professor attempted to backtrack after an X user reported his threatening message to FBI director Kash Patel. Arenella said he was only "speculating" and that his comments left a "misleading" impression.
Still, the UCLA professor said he regretted allowing his emotions to cloud his judgment.
"Military intervention could well trigger a civil war causing great harm to people on both sides of our current divided political culture. I regret that post and agree with Trump loyalists that it was not an appropriate response. Mea Culpa," he wrote.
Trump's triumph rattles critics
As criticism continued to pour in over his post, Arenella said he would take a break from posting for a while.
"I have suspended my posting here for at least a week because of my terminal stupidity and laziness in not editing a very misleading post. I will miss my followers and friends here but I have not been myself since a life long friend committed suicide," he added.
After the assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania, Arenella said he assumed at first that the attack was "staged" as he fretted about its consequences for "our democracy."
"I fear that the iconic picture of Trump raising his fist in defiance with our flag waving behind him will lead to his election and the loss of our democracy," Arenella wrote at the time.
Like many on the left, Arenella is clearly struggling to cope with President Trump's historic return to power and its consequences for the liberal order. The president's sweeping reform agenda has targeted funding for woke colleges and universities, placing tenured radicals at risk.
Unfortunately for the president's critics, Trump shows no signs of slowing down.
