Trump ally Byron Donalds seeks to replace Ron DeSantis as Florida Governor
Ally of President Donald Trump, Republican Representative Byron Donalds has launched his campaign for governor of Florida.
Donalds has represented the 19th Congressional District of Florida for the past four years and is ready for his next challenge.
Currently, Donalds is the only “major” Republican who has thrown his hat into the ring in the fight for the position.
Other challengers?
It will be an interesting race considering there is a large possibility that Florida first lady Casey DeSantis may make a run for governor herself.
She has already acknowledged it is not out of the realm of possibility and it is, in fact, a move she is currently considering.
In an interview with Fox News, Florida native and veteran Republican strategist Stephen Lawson lets his thought on the potential showdown be known.
“I think what you’ll see is a show of force and I think the support and the momentum that Bryon is generating across the state, whether it’s fundraising or grassroots support, will be evident,” said Lawson.
The current Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, will end his term in 2027.
DeSantis has made it abundantly clear he believes his wife would be a great successor, frequently publicly showering her with praise over all she has accomplished during her time as first lady.
Donalds' balancing act
However, Donalds has worked very hard to stay on good terms with the governor and his first lady, speaking very highly of DeSantis in recent days.
“We have a great governor," he said in an interview on “Hannity.”
"Ron DeSantis has done a tremendous job for our state. But now the job is to keep the best state in the country as the best state in the country. And so that's going to be the mission at hand,” he added.
One GOP strategist says this is an intentional move on Donalds’ part, making sure he stays on very good terms with DeSantis and his wife, Casey.
The strategist said Donalds “has been really careful to be kumbaya with the governor and Casey. I think you’ve seen that from his messaging… He wants to build on the conservative record of success in Florida while also forging his own path.”
According to Fox News, an internal poll “conducted earlier this month for Donalds' campaign indicated the congressman edging Casey DeSantis by single digits in a hypothetical GOP primary showdown.”
“However, the survey suggested that Donalds' lead surged to more than 20 points when respondents were informed that he is supported by Trump, whose sway over the GOP is stronger than ever,” Fox News’ article added.
