Eric Adams' lawyer asks judge to 'promptly' dismiss charges as mayoral campaign looms
The Department of Justice (DOJ) made headlines last year when it indicted New York City Mayor Eric Adams on corruption charges.
Yet in a major turn of events, Adams and the DOJ are now both asking that those charges be dismissed.
Adams' lawyer asks for quick dismissal
According to The Hill, attorney Alex Spiro represents the mayor, and he requested on Monday that U.S. District Judge Dale Ho "promptly" dismiss Adams' case.
Spiro pointed out that under New York election rules, his client only has until Thursday to submit the petition required for another mayoral run.
“Now, with the petition-filing deadline just days away, we respectfully urge the Court to issue its decision as soon as practicable,” Spiro wrote in a letter to Ho.
That move came just over two weeks after DOJ lawyers submitted a motion in which they asked that the charges against Adams be dropped.
"The United States respectfully submits this motion seeking dismissal without prejudice of the charges in this case, with leave of the Court," The Hill quoted it as stating.
Biden DOJ accused Adams of accepting bribes from Turkey
The DOJ announced in a press release last fall that Adams was accused of providing the Turkish government with political favors in exchange for campaign donations and overseas trips.
"As alleged, Mayor Adams abused his position as this City’s highest elected official, and before that as Brooklyn Borough President, to take bribes and solicit illegal campaign contributions," then U.S. Attorney Damian Williams declared.
"By allegedly taking improper and illegal benefits from foreign nationals—including to allow a Manhattan skyscraper to open without a fire inspection—Adams put the interests of his benefactors, including a foreign official, above those of his constituents," Williams alleged.
"This Office and our partners at the FBI and DOI will continue to pursue corruption anywhere in this City, especially when that corruption takes the form of illegal foreign influence on our democratic system," the prosecutor maintained.
Trump says mayor was targeted for criticizing Biden on immigration
However, President Donald Trump later asserted that the case against Adam's was brought by the Biden administration for political reasons.
Trump contended that Adams was being targeted for retribution after he spoke out against former President Joe Biden's handling of the migrant crisis.
"I watched about a year ago when he talked about how the illegal migrants are hurting our city and the federal government should pay us and we shouldn’t have to take them, and I said 'you know what, he’ll be indicted within the year' and I was exactly right," the Independent quoted the president as saying.
