Former Wisconsin Supreme Court justice who probed 2020 election surrenders law license
A former conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court justice who investigated the 2020 election results has agreed to surrender his law license.
Michael Gableman, who stepped down in 2018, agreed to give up his license for three years to settle a complaint about his conduct while leading a post-election probe into voter fraud.
The state's Republican Assembly Speaker, Robin Vos, had hired Gableman to lead the probe into President Trump's complaints of cheating.
Vos later fired Gableman, calling him an "embarrassment" after Vos narrowly survived a primary challenge backed by Trump and Gableman, who had turned on Vos for refusing to decertify the 2020 election results.
Judge surrenders license
An Office of Lawyer Regulation complaint filed in November accused Gableman of a litany of unethical and unprofessional behaviors.
The complaint said Gableman destroyed records sought by a liberal group and was belligerent towards a judge at a hearing on the matter. Gableman accused Dane County Circuit Judge Frank Remington of showing bias and trying to "railroad" him.
Gableman was also caught on a microphone during a recess impersonating the judge in a mocking fashion. The judge found Gableman in contempt for failing to comply with open records laws and forwarded the finding to the Office of Lawyer Regulation.
"The circus Gableman created in the courtroom destroyed any sense of decorum and irreparably damaged the public's perception of the judicial process," Remington wrote at the time.
Further, the disciplinary complaint against Gableman said he lied about the responses of Madison and Green Bay to his subpoenas, and he made false statements to the Waukesha County Circuit Court when he tried to have the mayors of both cities arrested.
Gableman acknowledged that he cannot contest the factual claims in the complaint.
Law Forward, the leftist group that sparked the disciplinary probe, said the firm is "glad to see consequences for those who plan and promote overturning the will of the people.”
Supreme Court turns left
Wisconsin is a swing state, and the left and right have fought bitterly over control of the Supreme Court. The court has a 4-3 liberal majority that was shored up in this month's highly publicized Supreme Court election, the most expensive judicial race in American history. Liberal judge Susan Crawford won, ensuring a liberal majority until 2028.
The Supreme Court needs to approve Gableman's settlement, and the court could take the rare step of disbarring him.
Several lawyers involved in pressing Trump's 2020 election complaints have faced legal sanctions over the years, but the pendulum has recently started to swing the other way as Trump signs executive orders targeting left-wing law firms that dominate the profession.
