Michigan's governor outrages Democrats by meeting with Trump

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) blindsided Democrats, last week, by meeting with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

This, according to the Daily Mail, came as a surprise to just about everyone, as Whitmer has been one of Trump's most vocal critics, and Trump has not exactly been a fan of hers either.

However, for this particular meetup, it appears that both individual agreed to put their differences aside.

While many see this as a good thing, many on the political left are furious with Whitmer for doing this.

The meetup

According to the New York PostWhitmer met with Trump for at least two reasons.

The outlet writes, "Whitmer was in Washington DC to discuss issues including tariffs and a recent ice storm which Whitmer has since asked for a Presidential Emergency Declaration."

The meeting seemed to go fairly well. Trump, in fact, had praise for Whitmer, saying, "She's really done an excellent job, a very good person."

Reports, however, suggest that more may have been going on than initially meets the eye.

Trump surprises Whitmer?

A spokesperson for Whitmer, following the meetup, put out a statement, saying:

The governor was surprised that she was brought into the Oval Office during President Trump's press conference without any notice of the subject matter. Her presence is not an endorsement of the actions taken or statements made at that event.

The Post reports that Whitmer even tried to hide her face from the cameras, seemingly wanting to cover up the fact that she - considered by many to be a far-left Democrat - was going to Trump for help.

Per the Post:

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was mocked after she was captured hiding her face behind a stack of binders to avoid being seen standing in the Oval Office when President Donald Trump spoke to the press. The 53-year-old Democrat was flanked by two White House aides as she shielded her identity behind a set of blue folders she was holding before her scheduled meeting with Trump . . .

It didn't work

Despite Whitmer and her team's best efforts at damage control, many Democrats are not happy with the situation and are harshly criticizing her for meeting with Trump.

One user put it this way, "Gretchen Whitmer really woke up this morning and said 'how can I blow up my 2028 prospects as quickly as possible' and damn she executed perfectly!"

It just goes to show where we are at as a country that a member of the opposition party cannot even meet with the other side without facing a significant backlash.
