Trump going after Democrat funraising organization Act Blue for violating federal laws
President Donald Trump said on Thursday that his administration will investigate Act Blue, a Democratic fundraising organization, for possible violations of federal law.
The Trump DOJ will be looking into alleged foreign "straw donors," who are not allowed to contribute to U.S. elections because of the undue influence that would inject.
House Republicans had previously uncovered evidence that they say shows violations by Act Blue, which have been passed on to Trump.
The organization is said to be in disarray.
"Significant fraud schemes"
A fact sheet on Trump's memorandum to the DOJ on the matter read:
The Memorandum directs the Attorney General to investigate and take appropriate action concerning allegations regarding the use of online fundraising platforms to make ‘straw’ or ‘dummy’ contributions and to make foreign contributions to U.S. political candidates and committees, all of which break the law.
Specifically, the Memorandum notes that a congressional investigation revealed significant fraud schemes using ActBlue and, over a 30-day period during the 2024 election cycle, hundreds of ActBlue donations from foreign IP addresses using prepaid cards, despite it being illegal for foreign nationals to contribute to U.S. elections. It instructs the Attorney General to report the results of the investigation to the President, through the Counsel to the President.
The findings aren't surprising, given the fact that Democratic candidates almost always outfundraise Republican ones, even when Republicans win elections.
The fact sheet went on to describe Act Blue as “notorious for its lax standards” and to state that the investigation is being done for the sake of election integrity and security.
"Fraud campaigns"
The House Republicans' report on Act Blue found 22 potential "fraud campaigns," with at least nine that were based around foreign contributions.
Act Blue had twice in 2024 loosened its mechanisms for detecting fraudulent contributions, which surely means that many fell through the ever-widening cracks.
“Internal documents produced to the Committees show that ActBlue policy changes have made it easier for bad actors to fraudulently donate to Democrat campaigns and causes,” the House report stated.
The report further found that actions Act Blue claimed were making donations more secure and less fraudulent were in fact designed to minimize their actual impact on donations.
There was a senior staff exodus in February, with at least eight senior staffers exiting the organization.
This threw Act Blue into chaos, and it may now be more difficult to determine whether fraud took place.
