Ex-Obama official blasts recently arrested anti-Trump judge for 'overstepping'
To the surprise of many, an ex-official from former President Barack Obama's administration is arguing that Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan "overstepped."
The official, according to Breitbart News, is John Sandweg.
Sandweg, at one point during the Obama administration, was the acting director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.
Before we get to what Sandweg had to say, we'll quickly catch you up to speed on the situation involving Dugan.
Judge gets locked up
Last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested Dugan after it was discovered that she was harboring an illegal immigrant.
Fox News reported:
Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan was arrested and charged with obstruction of an official proceeding after evidence came to light that she had shielded the migrant from ICE agents, according to a criminal complaint. She was also charged with concealing an individual to prevent discovery and arrest.
The outlet goes on to explain how federal agents attempted to arrest the illegal immigrant after the individual's appearance in court.
Fox, however, reports:
Dugan demanded that the officers proceed to the chief judge’s office and – after his hearing ended – escorted Flores-Ruiz and his attorney out a restricted jury door, bypassing the public area where agents were waiting in order to help him avoid arrest, per the complaint.
Dugan has stayed silent since her arrest.
"Overstepped"
Sandweg recently appeared on NewsNation's Cuomo, where he was asked about the situation with Dugan. To the surprise of some, the former Obama administration official did not come to Dugan's defense.
He began:
I would like to see the ICE agents just pick him up outside the courthouse or pick him up as he leaves the courthouse. During the Obama administration, as you know, during the Biden administration, we had a sensitive location policy. We couldn’t arrest people in a courthouse. I think there are good reasons for that.
Sandweg, however, quickly made it clear that he is not defending Dugan.
He continued:
I’m not here to defend this judge. … I think she overstepped here. I think there are other ways to lodge her objections. … I think the problem here is for ICE, and what bothers me the most, Chris, is that the Trump administration keeps putting them at the tip of the spear on these highly-charged cases in a way that’s very difficult, from a reputational perspective, for the agency to ever recover from.
"But, look, I don’t think there are any winners on this particular case," he concluded.
