Senator reveals plan to impeach Trump

A U.S. Senator has just gone public with the Democratic Party's plan to impeach President Donald Trump, should the party regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections.

The senator, according to the Daily Mail, is U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA).

Another question altogether is whether Ossoff will actually be around for that impeachment attempt.

He is expected to have a difficult reelection, so it is anyone's guess at the present moment.

Here we go again

Ossoff revealed the impeachment plan during a town hall event that he recently held in Georgia. There, he was asked why none of the Democratic Party's leaders are making an effort to impeach Trump.

A woman identified as left-wing activist Kate Denny said, "This is unacceptable. You can do more. Think outside the box. He needs to be impeached."

Ossoff agreed with the woman, saying, "There is no doubt that this president's conduct has already exceeded any prior standard for impeachment by the United States House of Representatives."

As is often the case, there was no one at the Town Hall to challenge Ossoff on this claim. The senator went on to say that, although he agrees with the woman, the only way an impeachment is going to occur is if the Democrats manage to get a hold of the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections.

Background

Trump was, of course, impeached twice by House Democrats during his first term. Both impeachments were dubious, to say the least, and both times the U.S. Senate refused to convict Trump.

Perhaps this is the very loose impeachment standard that Ossoff is referring to above.

The Senator did not get into the fact that one of the main reasons why Democrats are not currently trying to impeach Trump is because these sorts of "witch hunts," as Trump has referred to them, have consistently backfired on the Democrats.

One gets the sense, though, that this would not stop the Democrats from trying again, if they had the majority.

At the current moment, many forecasters are expecting the Republicans to hold on to the House in 2026, so unless this changes, it is unlikely that we will see any impeachments this time around.
