Former Clinton pollster admits that Democrats 'have fallen off a cliff'

A recent study carried out by the conservative watchdog group found that 92% of news stories put out by ABC, CBS, and NBC on President Donald Trump have been negative.

However, a one-time pollster for former President Bill Clinton recently admitted that negative media coverage won't be enough to save Democrats.

Mark Penn points widespread support for Trump's policies

According to the Daily Caller, Mark Penn made the acknowledgement this past Friday during an interview with Fox News host and former Trump White House adviser Larry Kudlow.

"I think it’s very interesting when you look at the polls on immigration," Penn remarked. "If I ask about Trump’s policies without Trump, support is 70% to 80%, OK? So when you put Trump in there, it comes back down to, in my poll, 50% to 55%."

"That means he has room to grow," the pollster maintained. "That means as his presidency rolls out, look, the media is not for him, right?"

He went on to say that while Trump's detractors "focus on every single negative thing they possibly can," many of the president's policies enjoy "overwhelming support."

Pollster: "The Democrats have fallen off a cliff"

Yet Penn asserted that whereas Trump is well placed to weather criticism, the same is not true of his opponents in the Democratic Party.

"The Democrats have fallen off a cliff," the pollster insisted. "They have gone from ratings in the 40s to the 30s, even the 20s. I’ve never seen such ratings."

"And so I think he has room to grow. I think, again, you can’t expect miracles in the first month, especially when it’s a polarized country,” Penn continued.

This is not the first time has put forward a dreary prognosis for Democrats, as he also did so during a previous appearance on Fox News earlier this month.

Penn says that a lurch to the left could leave Democrats "in the wilderness"

"In a situation like this where the party essentially has none of the branches of government and lost an election significantly and handily, that there is no leader of the party," Penn declared.

He acknowledged that New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders appear to jockey for control of the Democratic Party.

Nevertheless, Penn suggested that an embrace of far left figures could lead to another electoral wipeout similar to what Democrats experienced in 1972 and 1984.

"So the Democratic Party has been in the wilderness multiple times when it goes too far to the left," the polling expert said.
