Trump sanctions against International Criminal Court could bar Hollywood actor George Clooney and wife Amal from entering the U.S.
There has been a global surge of antisemitism in reaction to Israel's justified military response to Hamas' deadly 2023 terror attacks, including at the overtly biased International Criminal Court, which has pursued the arrest and prosecution of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top Israeli officials for alleged war crimes.
President Donald Trump imposed sanctions against the ICC over its targeting of Israel, and those sanctions could ultimately bar entry into the U.S. for Hollywood star George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, because of her work with the ICC, Fox News reported.
The Lebanon-born and U.K.-raised Amal, who is a practicing human rights attorney in both the U.K. and the U.S., reportedly provided legal advice to the ICC that helped build the alleged war crimes cases against Netanyahu and other Israeli officials.
Amal Clooney advised the ICC in targeting Israeli officials
The Financial Times first reported that the U.K. has issued a warning to attorneys who've provided legal advice to the ICC, including Amal Clooney, that they could be subject to the sanctions imposed on that entity by President Trump.
Clooney, who has made no secret of her utter contempt and disdain for Jews and Israel, reportedly advised the ICC on the arrest warrants it issued last year against Israeli PM Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes against Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
According to Fox News, Amal and George Clooney typically reside in France but also maintain homes in the U.K. and Italy, and are currently living in New York City while the star actor performs in a Broadway production.
Sanctions imposed against the ICC
On February 6, President Trump issued an executive order to impose punitive sanctions against the ICC because that entity "has engaged in illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel."
"The ICC has, without a legitimate basis, asserted jurisdiction over and opened preliminary investigations concerning personnel of the United States and certain of its allies, including Israel, and has further abused its power by issuing baseless arrest warrants targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Former Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant," the order stated.
That has occurred even though the ICC has no jurisdiction over the U.S. or Israel, since neither country is a member or even recognizes the purported authority of the ICC, given how the actions of that alleged court routinely violate national sovereignty.
"The ICC’s recent actions against Israel and the United States set a dangerous precedent, directly endangering current and former United States personnel, including active service members of the Armed Forces, by exposing them to harassment, abuse, and possible arrest," Trump's order said. "This malign conduct in turn threatens to infringe upon the sovereignty of the United States and undermines the critical national security and foreign policy work of the United States Government and our allies, including Israel."
Clooneys could be barred from entering the U.S., have assets and property seized
President Trump's order made it clear that the U.S. "unequivocally opposes" any actions taken by the ICC against the U.S., Israel, or any other non-member allied nation, and further announced the potential for serious repercussions for the ICC and anyone associated with it if that body persists in its targeting and persecution of non-member nations.
"The United States will impose tangible and significant consequences on those responsible for the ICC’s transgressions," the order stated, "some of which may include the blocking of property and assets, as well as the suspension of entry into the United States of ICC officials, employees, and agents, as well as their immediate family members, as their entry into our Nation would be detrimental to the interests of the United States."
What that means in practical terms for the Clooneys is that they could be barred from entering the U.S., if it should be determined that Amal, in her role as an attorney providing legal advice to the ICC, is classified as an ICC official, employee, or agent.
It also means that any assets or properties owned by the Clooneys in the U.S. could be subject to seizure, or at the very least, "blocked" from being "transferred, paid, exported, withdrawn, or otherwise dealt in" by the sanctioned individual and their "immediate family members," which includes spouses and children.
