Pennsylvania Democrat Sen. John Fetterman made headlines in 2022 when he suffered a stroke during that year's election campaign.

While Fetterman has since regained his speaking abilities, the lawmaker's recent alleged behavior has led some to question whether he is fit to hold office.

Meeting spurs controversy

According to the Associated Press, Fetterman grew belligerent during a meeting with representatives of the Pennsylvania State Education Association last week.

The news service cited unnamed sources as saying that Fetterman at one point slammed his hands on a desk while demanding to know why "everybody is mad at me."

What's more, a staff member is said to have ended the meeting early and then broke down in tears before being comforted by "teachers who were themselves rattled."

That alleged incident came one day before New York Magazine published an article in which former staff members voiced worries concerning Fetterman's mental health.

Senator defends "spirited conversation"

Meanwhile, Fox News reported that Fetterman's office provided a statement from the senator after the Associated Press' report on his alleged behavior was published.

"Here’s what is true: We had a spirited conversation about our collective frustration with the Trump administration’s cuts to our education system," Fetterman's statement read.

"As a proud product of PSEA, I will always support our teachers, and I will always reject anyone’s attempt to turn Pennsylvania’s public schools into a voucher program," he added.

Fetterman then went on to attack the New York Magazine article, suggesting that it relied on "disgruntled former staffers peddling lies and half-truths under the guise of 'concern.'"

Fox News also noted that some Democrats who previously denied that Fetterman's stroke had impacted his ability function are now uncertain as to whether he should remain in Washington.

Fetterman: Democrats make "Trump look more presidential"

Meanwhile, Fox News host Will Cain suggested on Monday that Democrats resent Fetterman for being insufficiently hostile to President Donald Trump.

Indeed, the Pennsylvania senator called out others in his party for their behavior during Trump's address to a joint session of Congress in March.

"It only makes Trump look more presidential and restrained," he wrote in a social media post, "We’re becoming the metaphorical car alarms that nobody pays attention to -- and it may not be the winning message."
