Bill to adopt 'Gulf of America' naming passes the House
Democrats are "outraged" after the House of Representatives voted to adopt President Trump's renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
Every Democrat voted against the measure, which passed 211-206. It was brought by Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). Every Republican except one, Don Bacon, (Ne.), voted in favor.
"This is such an important thing to do for the American people. The American people deserve pride in their country, and they deserve pride in the waters that we own, that we protect with our military and our Coast Guard and all of the businesses that prosper along these waters," Greene said during debate on the bill.
Gulf of America bill passes
Although Republicans supported the bill, some privately complained that it wasn't a good use of Congress' time. Congress is currently busy crafting Trump's ambitious legislative agenda, and Greene's bill has little chance of passing the Senate, where Republicans must secure Democratic votes to bypass a filibuster.
"125 other [executive orders], this is the one we pick," one lawmaker told Fox News Digital.
Democrats criticized the bill as childish.
"Republicans think this juvenile legislation is the best use of this House's time. This is the only work we're doing today, folks," Rep. Steny Hoyer, (D-Md.).
"What a sick joke this is. Republicans worry about 400-year-old words on a map. I worry about families and every community in America that's struggling to get by."
But Greene said the Democratic opposition to the bill shows that they hate America.
"But Democrats today are outraged. They're outraged because they love the cartels more than any other people in the world, more than the American people, "she said.
Mexico takes legal action
The legislation codifies Trump's executive order, which renames the Gulf in honor of the United States. The move was classic Trump, combining vainglorious patriotism with his famous love of branding.
The order also gave Greene an opening to make a grab for attention. The Georgia firebrand, who is more known for causing drama than passing legislation, is eyeing a Senate run in 2026.
The MAGA firebrand recently turned against Trump, accusing his administration of losing touch with his base with recent moves on foreign policy. She later clarified her comments and said Trump voters are mad at Congress and not Trump.
Trump's renaming of the Gulf has not only annoyed Democrats. It has struck nerves south of the border, where leftist president Claudia Sheinbaum has taken legal action against Google for updating its map in compliance with Trump's wishes.
