Tens of thousands of Afghan citizens were brought to the United States in 2021 following then President Joe Biden's disastrous pullout from their country.

However, the Trump administration recently announced that it is moving to end the legal status which allows them to remain.

Afghans "do not meet the requirements" for Temporary Protected Status

According to the Daily Wire, the decision concerns Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a provision in immigration law which covers foreign nationals who are prevented "from returning safely" to their county of origin.

"This administration is returning TPS to its original temporary intent," the Daily Wire quoted Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem as saying in a document released this week.

"We’ve reviewed the conditions in Afghanistan with our interagency partners, and they do not meet the requirements for a TPS designation," the DHS secretary continued.

"Afghanistan has had an improved security situation, and its stabilizing economy no longer prevent them from returning to their home country," Noem went on to insist.

Concerns over the fate of Afghan Christians

She justified the removal of TPS by pointing to a reduction of conflict in Afghanistan as well as the resumption of Chinese tourism there.

"Though humanitarian need remains prevalent, the number of those in need of assistance has declined to 23.7 million this year, a decrease from the more than 29 million Afghan nationals in need reported the previous year," Noem pointed out.

Nevertheless, former Southern Baptist Convention president Bryant Wright argued in an op-ed piece for Fox News that ending TPS will put Afghan Christians at risk.

"President Trump is absolutely right, of course, to prioritize border security, and most evangelical Christians are thankful for the quick progress he has made to secure our borders," Wright wrote.

"Likewise, almost all evangelical Christians are glad that immigrants convicted of violent crimes are being deported," he acknowledged.

Still, Write hopes and prays that the president will "listen to the appeals of evangelical voters, override the actions of overzealous staffers and protect Afghans and others persecuted for their faith in Jesus."

Meanwhile, the conservative group Judicial Watch published a letter sent in 2022 by Republican Sens. Josh Hawley and Ron Johnson to the Department of Defense (DOD) inspector general.

They cited claims from a DOD whistleblower who indicated that some 324 individuals who had been flagged as national security threats were released into the United States.
