Justice Barrett is earning the ire of Trump supporters
It would appear that Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett has managed to earn the ire of many of President Donald Trump's supporters.
This, according to Fox News, is for multiple reasons.
On the one hand, Barrett has shown a general willingness to vote with her liberal colleagues at times, despite the fact that she was nominated by Trump under the pretenses of being a conservative justice. Then, on the other hand, Barrett recently raised the eyebrows of Republicans by sparring with the solicitor general.
Trump, though, as we will see, appears to be standing behind Barrett.
The latest
Here, we'll focus on the recent incident in which Barrett sparred with U.S. Solicitor General John Sauer. It took place on Thursday.
According to Fox, Barrett pressed Sauer "on whether the Trump administration would follow federal court precedent."
Per the outlet:
The back-and-forth took place Thursday during oral arguments in a case related to President Donald Trump's effort to end birthright citizenship with a specific focus on whether lower courts should be able to block executive actions from taking effect nationwide. Justice Barrett, a Trump appointee, grilled Sauer about the administration's stance toward lower court rulings, which followed similar lines of inquiry from her colleagues on the bench.
This has played right into the hands of the political left, which has been attacking on this very issue.
As one conservative commentator put it:
Amy Coney Barrett (ACB) is proving once again she may the the worst SCOTUS pick ever by a Republican. She has a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. … Yet you can hear her disdain for the Trump administration.
Trump's take
To be clear, Trump has not responded publicly to this precise incident. But, he has come to Barrett's defense in the not-too-distant past after she, once again, earned the ire of conservatives.
Just in March 2025, Trump was asked about Barrett, and he had nothing but praise for her.
He said:
She’s a very good woman. She’s very smart, and I don’t know about people attacking her, I really don’t know. I think she’s a very good woman. She’s very smart.
These situations, of course, are not so easy to judge. Before one could really criticize Barrett, one would have to comb through her court opinions to see whether she really is aligning herself with the political left, or whether she is actually following the law.
Out of the justices nominated by Trump, however, she definitely seems to depart from the likes of Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas the most.
