Cali lawmaker suspected of drunk driving accident
After a car incident outside the state Capitol on Monday, California Senator Sabrina Cervantes says she was wrongfully accused of driving under the influence.
A collision involving Cervantes caused officers from the Sacramento Police Department to rush to the scene near the state Capitol building, as The Daily Mail.
According to the authorities, someone other than the victim or first responders drove the lawmaker to the hospital to treat her minor injuries.
"I want to be clear that I remain innocent, I have done nothing wrong," the Democrat from Riverside told a group of reporters after the Senate concluded session.
From Police
Following Monday's incident only blocks from the state Capitol, the Sacramento Police Department cited her on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.
The authorities are still awaiting the results of a blood test that was administered as part of their inquiry, and have not yet charged her.
According to Cervantes, who spoke with reporters at KCRA 3, she had herself not only voluntarily submitted to drug and alcohol testing done at the hospital, she actually requested it herself. According to her, a car that disregarded a stop sign t-boned her.
The processing time for the blood work might be several days or weeks, according to a representative for the Sacramento Police Department.
From the Lawmaker
The state lawmaker had a clear statement for California residents who are concerned that an elected official acted inappropriately.
"The Sacramento Police Department has falsely accused me," she said. "I do not know what the Sacramento Police Department's motivations are but I expect my name to be clear."
"I hold myself to the highest standard and integrity, anyone can speak to my character and I want to make sure my name will be vindicated and will be cleared because I did nothing wrong," Cervantes said.
About the Hospital
Cervantes has since promised to provide more details in the days to come when asked whether she could elaborate on her encounter with hospital police.
According to multiple sources who spoke with KCRA 3, Cervantes is being truthful. A few have gone on record in her defense.
“Sabrina Cervantes is a person and public servant of the highest integrity and character,” said former Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon on Thursday night's X post. "When she says she will be vindicated, I believe her." When she says she will be vindicated, I believe her."
Earlier this week, Senate Pro Tem Mike McGuire spoke to reporters and expressed his belief that her name would be cleared.
